As the month comes to an end, this is your reminder that bowel cancer awareness doesn't end in June.

Bowel cancer remains one of the most common, and treatable, cancers in Australia when detected early. Routine screening, healthy lifestyle habits, and knowing your risk factors can make all the difference.

✔️ If you’re over 50, or have a family history, talk to your GP about screening
✔️ Stay active, eat well, and prioritise your gut health
✔️ Don’t ignore symptoms like persistent changes in bowel habits, unexplained fatigue, or abdominal pain

Early detection saves lives. If you have any questions or would like to make an appointment with a GP, head to our website or call (02) 6196 6700.

It’s Men’s Health Week 👨

Looking after your mental and physical health doesn’t have to be complicated. Small, consistent changes can make a real difference: and small, consistent habits can make a big difference.

Here’s what the research tells us:

• Men who regularly talk to friends, family, or a therapist are up to 40% less likely to experience severe depression.
• A Mediterranean-style diet, rich in vegetables, whole grains and lean protein, can reduce the risk of depression by up to 50%.
• Getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night can lower your risk of depression and anxiety by nearly 50% and also improves immune function, hormone balance, and decision-making.
• Just 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily can reduce symptoms of depression by up to 30%, and lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes.
• Keeping alcohol intake under 10 standard drinks per week supports long-term health, reducing the risk of cancer, liver disease, high blood pressure, and sexual dysfunction.

This Men’s Health Week, take a moment to check-in with yourself and the men in your life. And if you need support, your GP is a great place to start.

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month 🍎

Screening plays a crucial role in prevention, with research showing that up to 32% of bowel cancer cases can be prevented through endoscopic screening alone - and this rises to 61% when combined with healthy lifestyle changes.

Risk factors we can influence include:
✔️ Diet and alcohol intake
✔️ Physical activity
✔️ Smoking
✔️ Maintaining a healthy weight
✔️ Regular screening

Non-modifiable risk factors include:
– Age (risk increases after 40)
– Personal or family history of bowel cancer or polyps
– Inflammatory bowel conditions like Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis
– Genetic conditions such as FAP or Lynch Syndrome

Early detection saves lives. If you’re over 50, have a family history, or other risk factors, talk to your GP about screening options such as a colonoscopy.
