Feeling grateful to be featured during Mental Health Awareness Week 🙏
A heartfelt thank you to Heidi for capturing my journey so thoughtfully.
What began as volunteering with MIEACT has grown into a deep and ongoing commitment to supporting others through counselling, naturopathy, and lifestyle medicine. My practice, Holistic Remedies and Holistic Counsellor, is my way of bringing together everything I’ve learned: that healing is never one-dimensional. Our bodies, minds, and lives are all connected. I’m honoured to be part of a community that believes in the power of lived experience, empathy, and integrative care.

During Mental Health Awareness Week (12–17 May), we reflect on how mental health is not just a conversation, it’s a commitment. A commitment to breaking silence, to building safer spaces, and to shifting how we understand wellbeing in all its complexity. In Canberra, few embody this transformati...

Take a moment to reflect: What brings you joy? What activity makes time seem to disappear, leaving you fully immersed and at peace? It could be spending time in nature, watching a sunset, engaging in creative pursuits, connecting with loved ones, practicing spiritual routines like prayer or meditation, or contributing to your community. Whatever it is, give yourself permission to make time for it—daily or weekly. These moments aren’t indulgent; they’re rejuvenating, energising, and uplifting. Add them to your calendar and treat them as non-negotiable.

Think about it: Do you hesitate before charging your phone? When your battery is low, don’t you urgently seek a charger? Your inner battery deserves the same priority. Take the time to recharge yourself regularly. As you step into the busyness of 2025 and beyond, ask yourself: What recharges your energy? And are you ready to give it the attention it deserves?

I recently read a fascinating book, an international bestseller, and it is about breathing. ‘Breath: the new science of a lost art’ by James Nestor. The book delves into the scientific, cultural, spiritual and evolutionary history into the way humans breathe and get this – how we have been doing it wrong for a very long time. In his book James says making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can jump-start athletic performance; rejuvenate internal organs; halt snoring, asthma, and autoimmune disease; and even straighten scoliotic spines. If you would rather listen to a podcast about James Nestor’s work then here it is: How to transform your health through your breath. - https://drchatterjee.com/how-to-transform-your-health-through-your-breath-with-james-nestor/

Here’s the secret to building a sustainable routine: simplicity. The easier it is, the less resistance you’ll face. Start with one small, manageable practice that you’re willing to commit to every day. For example, having a light meal at least three hours before bedtime and aiming for consistent sleep can make a big difference. Our bodies and minds thrive on good-quality rest. Going to bed around the same time most nights will help regulate your circadian rhythm, and in turn improve blood sugar control, enhance mental clarity, and boost mood. Remember, this is just one idea. The key is to find a small daily practice that feels right for you and stick with it. Small steps lead to meaningful change. What is the one small thing you are prepared to incorporate into your daily routine to look after your body?

If there is one thing we all can benefit from is taking a much-needed break from our phones and giving our minds the pause it deserves.

Putting away phones and portable devices, an hour before bedtime and keeping it out of the bedroom is a good start. This simple act creates space for something truly nourishing, calming, and peaceful before you sleep.

You could pick up a book, enjoy soothing music, sip on a comforting herbal tea, journal your thoughts, or have a meaningful conversation with your partner. The possibilities are endless—choose whatever brings you joy and relaxation. Resist the urge to reach for your phone as soon as you wake up. Instead, spend the first 5–10 minutes simply noticing how you feel. Stretch gently, soak up some morning sunlight, or sit quietly and centre yourself before diving into the day ahead. These small, mindful habits can work wonders for your mental clarity and overall sense of well-being. Are you prepared to commit to this simple habit to keep your mind and mood fresh and alive?

One simple yet powerful addition to your daily diet I would recommend this year and beyond is the humble lemon. This citrus fruit is a true champion for liver health, an organ responsible for detoxifying the body, metabolising nutrients, and producing bile to aid digestion.

Packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, lemons help neutralise free radicals and boost the production of glutathione, a crucial compound for liver detoxification. Lemon juice enhances digestion, stimulates bile production, and promotes the elimination of toxins.

Even the skin of the lemon is a treasure trove of goodness—it contains limonene, a compound with potent anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. By adding lemon juice and zest to your routine—whether in warm water, teas, salads, or dressings—you can naturally support your liver, improve digestion, and enhance overall vitality.

My go-to after an indulgent, heavy meal? A lemon—skin and all.

Today (Oct 10) is World Mental Health Day.

Sometimes I wonder why we have special days or months to acknowledge, celebrate or remember something that should always be front and centre. Perhaps this is an indication of the times we live in when life seems to gush past us and we need these little reminders to pull us back, pause and reflect on things that really matter.

And what really matters is the little things that fill our day and what we make it out to be. Love, kindness, beauty, joy, stillness and peace are everywhere around us and within us and all we need to do is look for it.

To all of you out there dealing with life’s challenges, big and small, give yourself a pat at the end of the day because you deserve it, take some time out for self-care because you matter and go with the flow. Take one day at a time and savour it!
