We believe early intervention is crucial in reducing the long-term impact of workplace injuries. In our experience, addressing injuries promptly leads to faster recovery times and lower costs for both workers and employers.

This month, we’re sharing why timely treatment, open communication, and collaboration with rehabilitation providers are essential to a successful recovery. Taking a proactive approach, we believe, not only supports individuals but also helps build a more engaged and resilient workforce. If you’re ready to take early intervention seriously, we’re here to guide you with tailored advice and services.

At Ascent Rehabilitation, we believe that workplace wellbeing is the cornerstone of a productive and supportive environment. Creating a culture that prioritises mental and physical health may not only lead to fewer injuries but, in our view, can significantly boost overall satisfaction.

This month, we’re sharing strategies that employers, workers, and stakeholders can use to create environments where wellbeing thrives. By focusing on ergonomic workspaces, flexible schedules, and mental health initiatives, we believe workplaces can become safer, healthier, and more resilient. We’re passionate about supporting organisations as they invest in wellbeing, which we view as leading to improved productivity, enhanced employee engagement, and a more positive workplace atmosphere.

At Ascent Rehabilitation, we’re proud to celebrate the incredible people who make our work possible. Last month, we highlighted Megan. This month, we’re delighted to introduce Carol-Lynn Andreitchenko, a driven and compassionate Occupational Therapist. Meet Carol-Lynn:

"My name is Carol-Lynn, and I am an Occupational Therapist from South Africa. Late 2022, I embarked on an exciting new adventure, with my twin daughters, and took up a role as a Rehabilitation Consultant with Ascent Rehabilitation.

I obtained my undergraduate BSC OT degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, and have two post graduate diplomas, with a Post Graduate Diploma in Vocational Rehabilitation, providing a robust foundation for the skills of a Rehabilitation Consultant at Ascent Rehabilitation. I have also recently completed a Certificate in Pain Management.

I have had the privilege of acquiring extensive and varied clinical skills over my 35-year journey as an Occupational Therapist, starting my career at a public/government hospital, rotating through various areas. I then started my Private Practice, with a colleague, specialising in areas of hand injuries, neurological, and cognitive rehabilitation. I have also had the opportunity to train both undergraduate students in my field, and qualified Occupational Therapists in South Africa.

Whilst at Ascent Rehabilitation, I have added Activities of Daily Living Assessments, and Workstation/Ergonomic Assessments to my service offerings, and was afforded the opportunity to co-author a chapter entitled “Work and Mental Health – Facilitating and Sustaining Work Engagement” in Crouch and Alers Occupational Therapy in Psychiatry and Mental Health, 6th Edition, which was published by Wiley-Blackwell this year, and is something I’m incredibly proud of in my career.

I have a passion for working with clients with complex health needs, collaborating in a team setting, promoting a holistic sustainable approach to recovery, and fostering empowerment and adaptability.

Outside of work, I love my daughters, cats, the noisy cockatoo flying over, coffee, walks in nature, exploring new things and places, browsing art galleries, going to the theatre, reading, and catching up with friends."

Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) are, in our view, a cornerstone of effective rehabilitation. At Ascent Rehabilitation, we use FCEs to thoroughly assess an individual’s capabilities, helping us create personalised recovery plans that meet their specific needs.

Using real-time data, FCEs deliver critical insights into a worker’s strengths, limitations, and recovery potential. We believe these insights are essential for supporting the development of strategies that drive long-term, sustainable recovery.

To read more about how FCEs aid recovery and add value within the workers’ compensation system, go to: https://ascentrehab.com/index.php/2025/06/27/understanding-functional-capacity-evaluations-fces-the-value-process-and-purpose-in-the-australian-workers-compensation-context/

Trauma affects millions of Australians each year, and we believe raising awareness is a crucial step toward understanding and healing. PTSD is, in our view, one of the most prevalent mental health challenges, yet it often remains unrecognised or untreated.

At Ascent Rehabilitation, we are committed to helping people connect with the right resources and support. While we do not provide direct PTSD treatment, we believe that no one should have to navigate these challenges alone. By guiding individuals toward the appropriate resources, we aim to support their journey toward recovery and well-being.

This PTSD Awareness Day, we’re reflecting on the importance of compassion and advocacy. We believe that encouraging open conversations, raising awareness, and supporting access to the right resources can help create pathways for healing.

At Ascent Rehabilitation, we’re proud to shine a light on the remarkable individuals who drive our work forward. Last month, we featured Adelaide. This month, we’re excited to introduce another valued team member, Megan Spavins, a passionate Occupational Therapist. Here’s Megan’s introduction:

"I’m Megan – an Occupational Therapist originally from sunny South Africa. Before moving to Australia four years ago, I worked in private practice doing functional capacity evaluations, return to work case management, and medicolegal assessments. These days, I call Canberra home (and yes, I’ve embraced the gum trees, cockatoos, and occasional sub-zero mornings).

I have a special interest in chronic pain management and have completed further studies in this area. I love learning and often find myself diving headfirst into new topics – one interesting article and suddenly I’m deep down a rabbit hole. I really enjoy the variety that comes with my work as a Rehabilitation Consultant, especially the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and support them through the different stages of their recovery and return to work.

Outside of work, you’ll usually find me hiking in the bush, wandering through op shops in search of hidden treasures, or getting creative with handmade cards and home decorating (thanks to those op shop finds). My ideal holiday would be a week-long hike in Tasmania – with my dog happily trotting along beside me. I’ve got a mildly adventurous spirit and a big love for nature, creativity, and community – all of which make Canberra the perfect place to call home."

On International Nurses Day, we take a moment to recognise the incredible dedication and compassion of Nurses who play an essential role in the recovery process. At Ascent Rehabilitation, our Nurses are vital to the rehabilitation journey, offering expert care, emotional support, and guidance to individuals through every step.
Their commitment to holistic care goes beyond physical recovery, supporting mental and emotional well-being as well. Today, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of Nurses and their dedication to fostering a healthier, more resilient future for those on the path to recovery.

At Ascent Rehabilitation, we’re proud to highlight the exceptional people who make a lasting impact on the work we do. Last month, we introduced Christel. This month, we’re excited to introduce Adelaide Hunter, our driven Registered Nurse, who is dedicated to enhancing the wellbeing of those on their recovery journey. Here’s Adelaide’s introduction:

"My name is Adelaide, and for the past three years I have been working at Ascent Rehabilitation as a Rehabilitation Consultant. As a Registered Nurse with a background in surgical and emergency nursing, I bring expertise in recovery from surgery and navigating the healthcare system. My day-to-day work involves meeting with injured parties and partnering with them to ensure their treatment is optimal and their recovery is progressing, while providing education and support. I also work with employers and insurers to ensure there is strong communication that facilitates the best support network and an early return to work. My areas of interest include pain management and resilience. I enjoy that my work allows me to get to know a wide range of people working in a variety of jobs, and to understand how to support their goals.

When not at work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two dogs, going to the gym, running, reading, and spending time with my family at the coast. I also enjoy travelling – especially when it involves hiking and eating delicious food."

At Ascent Rehabilitation, we believe that safety and health are essential not just in the workplace, but in every aspect of our lives. Today is World Day for Safety and Health at Work, a day dedicated to raising awareness of the global need for improved safety and health standards at work, aimed at preventing work-related injuries and illnesses.

On this day, we’re reflecting on how individuals and organisations can come together to create safer, more resilient environments for everyone. Whether it’s supporting mental well-being or implementing simple safety measures, even small changes may have a lasting impact. By working together, we can foster healthier, more supportive environments where individuals are empowered, supported, and equipped to thrive.

Psychosocial hazards, like workplace stress or a lack of support, can impact anyone. At Ascent Rehabilitation, we believe that raising awareness is the first step towards meaningful change. This month, we’re exploring ways to identify and address these risks through open communication, prioritising mental health, and fostering supportive environments.

In our experience, when we work together to create spaces that value safety and well-being, everyone benefits. Let’s make health and safety a shared priority and empower each other to thrive—one conversation at a time.

At Ascent Rehabilitation, we’re proud to share the incredible people behind our work. Last month, we introduced Jessica. Now, we’re highlighting another valued team member. This month, meet Christel Grobler, a dedicated Social Worker committed to making a difference. Here’s Christel’s introduction:

"I'm an experienced Mental Health Social Worker from South Africa, and I’ve been working as a Rehabilitation Consultant at Ascent for just over three years. I’m passionate about connecting with people from diverse cultures and age groups, and I thrive on helping clients navigate challenging situations to find practical and effective solutions. I believe in a person-centred approach, where the client’s needs, strengths, and autonomy are at the heart of my practice. My work is grounded in values like unconditional positive regard, and the belief that every individual knows themselves best. I’m also committed to the idea that hard work leads to meaningful and impactful results, with effort being a key ingredient to positive outcomes.

I enjoy travelling and exploring new places. While I’ve done a bit of travelling, there are still many places to explore. I love reading, especially non-fiction and biographies, but I occasionally indulge in fiction as well. Crime TV series, sitcoms, and trips to the movies are some of my favourite ways to unwind. Spending time with friends is important to me, and I have a deep appreciation for life’s little pleasures—like coffee, wine, and chocolates. I have a strong love for animals, with a special place in my heart for dogs, and a special bond with magpies. My family—my husband, our two teenage children, and our dog—are my pillars of support, and the most important part of my life."
