How hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause impact your pelvic floor 💗
Oestrogen plays a vital role in maintaining the health and function of the pelvic floor, it supports strength, elasticity, blood supply, hydration and resilience
During perimenopause oestrogen levels fluctuate for 4-10 years and as you move into menopause oestrogen levels decline and remain low
This impacts:
✨ Pelvic floor muscles - they may become weaker and less coordinated
✨ Bladder and urethral tissues - may be impacted creating urinary leakage, urgency or frequency
✨ Connective tissues and ligaments - lose laxity resulting in reduced support for pelvic organs increasing risk of prolapse
✨ Vaginal tissues - may become drier and thinner contributing to pain and discomfort with in*******se
