Perineal massage is a technique often recommended by obstetricians, midwives and physiotherapists in the weeks leading up to labour to help prepare the perineum (the area between the va**na and a**s) for childbirth. Evidence suggests that perineal massage from 35 weeks pregnant may be associated with a reduced risk of pelvic floor injury or need for an episiotomy in women experiencing their first va**nal birth. The evidence also suggests that 2nd stage labour time (the pushing part) may be reduced, post-delivery perineal pain may be reduced, and wound healing may be improved.
Perineal massage can be demonstrated to you (and your partner if you’d like!) by your physiotherapist, any time from 35 weeks. At this appointment, we can also discuss and practice your pushing technique; ensuring you feel really well prepared for your upcoming labour.
