Racism in community sport isn't just about isolated incidents – it's a systemic issue that affects everything from how welcome players feel in the changerooms to whether they continue participating in sport at all. When racism goes unchallenged, it sends a powerful message that certain people don't belong, driving talented athletes away from the sports they love.

Read our article ‘The Need for Effective Anti-Racism Approaches in Community Sport’ to learn about the ways you can challenge racism in your sport and how you can make it a more inclusive place for all women and girls.

Muscle memory is the brain's ability to automate movements through repetition, allowing tasks like riding a bike or typing to become automatic, and involves changes in the motor cortex, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. It's a form of procedural memory, making skills more efficient and requiring less conscious thought. The term also refers to how muscles quickly regain size and strength after a break, linked to cellular changes in muscle fibers.
How it works (Motor Skill)
Repetition Creates Pathways: Repeatedly performing a movement strengthens neural connections, making the signal transmission faster and more efficient.
Brain Regions Involved: The motor cortex, cerebellum, and basal ganglia work together to store and execute these motor patterns.
Phases of Learning: Starts in the cognitive phase (conscious effort) and moves to the associative phase (improved with practice).
Examples: Playing musical instruments, typing, sports, dancing, swimming, or even entering PINs.
How it works (Physical Strength)
Cellular Memory: When you build muscle, muscle fibers gain more nuclei, which aids in protein synthesis.
Faster Regrowth: Even after muscle loss, these extra nuclei remain, allowing the muscle to rebuild size and strength much faster when you start training again.
Key Takeaway
Muscle memory isn't literally stored in the muscles but is a neurological process where the brain encodes movement patterns, making them automatic and persistent, and also helps muscles efficiently regain lost mass.
