Physically Active People Have Lower Health Risk

The current European and American recommendations concerning physical activity indicate:

βœ…150 min per week of moderate physical exercise (30 min/day, 5 days/week)
or
βœ… 75 min/week of physical exercise of vigorous intensity (15 min/day, 5 days/week).

Practicing physical exercise is recommended at a frequency of at least three to five sessions per week.

The best results, in terms of health benefits, occur with a daily workout and a combination of exercise of both moderate and vigorous intensity, performed in sessions with a duration of at least 10 min.

Cesare found the following benefits in health conditions and illness.
βœ”οΈ48% Decrease Risk Of Depression
βœ”οΈ33% Decrease Risk Of Hypertension
βœ”οΈ35% Decrease Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes
βœ”οΈ66% Decrease Risk Of Bone Fractures
βœ”οΈ20% Decrease Risk Of Breast Cancer
βœ”οΈ25% Decrease Risk Of Coronary Heart Disease & Stroke

The physio team got together on Game 2 a couple weeks ago, made the physio beds into recliner beds and witnessed Queensland win the series.

But last night New South Wales got the win to make the series 2-1.

Until next year we witness the blues bring back the shield.

High-Load Strengthening In Hypermobile Shoulders Lead To Greater Improvements In Shoulder Functions

People with hypermobile shoulders are at greater risk of developing shoulder complaints.

Liaghat et al. (2022) compared a low-load strengthening program against a high-load one for self-reported shoulder functioning.

According to results, the high-load strengthening in hypermobile shoulders led to a greater improvement in shoulder function.

How Does Exercise Manage Diabetes?

It’s estimated that around 1.7 million Australians are living with this diabetes. Worryingly, one in two people doesn’t know that they have it. If left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to blindness, amputation, kidney failure, heart attack, and stroke.

Exercise cannot reverse the damage to the cells in the pancreas, leading to decreased insulin production. However, exercise can improve the way the muscles respond to insulin, which, in turn, helps regulate the blood glucose level for some hours after exercise.

If you’re living with a chronic condition, injury, or illness, an Accredited Exercise Physiologist is the best person to help you get moving again. They understand the challenges and will work with you (and your doctor) to prescribe safe and effective exercise interventions.

Pop in to either our locations or for more information, give us a call on (02) 6262 4464 to see how our staff at Sport and Spinal Physiotherapy can help you better your knowledge about diabetes and your ability to perform and function better as a person in day to day life and in sport activities.

The Injury & Performance Equation

We wanted to share the importance of understanding the Injury Performance Equation: Injury = Load > Capacity

In simple terms, this equation represents the balance between the stress we put on our bodies through exercise (load), and our bodies ability to handle that stress (capacity). When the load exceeds our capacity, that's when injury can occur.

As an Physio's and EP's, our job is to dive into the delicate balance between pushing your limits and avoiding injury or further injury.

Every time we train, we are improving our capacity to handle increased training and life stress.

Pop in to either our locations or for more information, give us a call on (02) 6262 4464 to see how our staff at Sport and Spinal Physiotherapy can help you better your knowledge about what you can do to make sure you do not exceed your capacity threshold and better your performance.

How Much Exercise Should I Do?

The Australian Physical Activity Guidelines have been developed to help guide our decision making around how much, and what type of exercises we should engage in per day / week.

I've included summaries for each age group, but the main takeaways are;

Try for 30-60 mins exercise most days

Try a mixture of aerobic / strength

Try limit sedentary behaviour.

Pop in to either our locations or for more information, give us a call on (02) 6262 4464 to see how our staff at Sport and Spinal Physiotherapy can help you better your knowledge about what exercises you can do to make sure to reduce your risk of further morbidities that are caused by prolonged inactivity.

Retear Rates After Rotator Cuff Surgery: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis

Rotator cuff repair is often advocated to restore normal shoulder function.

BUT retear rates may be as high as 94% !!

Longo et al (2021) found that rotator cuff retear rates were:

- 15% at 3 months,
- 21% at 3-6 months,
- 16% at 6-12 months,
- 21% at 12-24 months,
- 16% at follow-up longer than 2 years.

Pop in to either our locations or for more information, give us a call on (02) 6262 4464 to see how our staff at Sport and Spinal Physiotherapy can help you strengthen, manage and overcome daily activities that are affected by rotator cuff injuries.
