🐑 Border Disease confirmed in a Tasmanian flock

“Hairy shaker” lambs have recently been identified in a Tasmanian flock that had imported sheep from the mainland. The disease, caused by a pestivirus, has long been present in Australia but has not been considered a problem in Tasmania. Dr Bruce Jackson, vet and consultant working with AHA as part of the National Sheep Industry Biosecurity Strategy, provides practical advice to help reduce the impact of the disease for which there is no cure or vaccine.

NBRT Advisory Group Plans Ahead

Recently, AHA welcomed members of the NBRT Advisory Group to our Canberra office for their quarterly meeting and a planning session for the 2026 NBRT Professional Development (PD) Week workshop.

Representatives from Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and jurisdictional agricultural departments met face to face to review progress of the 2024–28 NBRT program and map out next year’s PD Week.

We appreciate your valuable input and look forward to seeing you at the next workshop in 2026!

Steering Committee advances arbovirus monitoring recommendations

The National Arbovirus Monitoring Program Steering Committee recently met to consider recommendations from its 5 year review.

✅ Consensus was reached on 16 of 17 recommendations.
🔍Industry cost sharing proportions are now under discussion by a short term working group.

This marks an important step in strengthening Australia’s arbovirus monitoring framework for bluetongue, bovine ephemeral fever (three-day sickness) and Akabane viruses.
