Weight is a common complaint seen in General Practice, with nearly two thirds of Australians living in a higher weight body.

Dr Ashleyn Smith has a special interest in higher weight management and prides herself on a non-judgemental, holistic approach to helping people achieve their health goals. She holds additional qualifications including:

• Maintaining SCOPE certification in obesity management through the World Obesity Federation since 2022.
• Professional Certificate of Medical Nutrition
• Advanced Certificate of Medical Nutrition

Additionally, she continues to upskill holding membership with NACOS, the Obesity Medicines Association (USA) and is currently working towards her Masters of Medicine in Metabolic Health. She is also uniquely qualified having lived in a higher weight body herself.

Starting from June 2025, Dr Smith will be offering specialised appointments in higher weight management on Wednesday afternoons. These longer appointments provide for more time to get to know your individual circumstances, discuss options and plan towards meeting your individual goals.

We’re excited to announce that Dr Yoo-Mi Kim will commence in May 2025 here at Gungahlin Medical Centre!
Dr Yoo-Mi is a longstanding and highly regarded General Practiioner in Canberra. She has a special interest in women’s health, family planning including iud insertion and removal, antenal care and child health. Her attention to detail, dogged perserverance and caring nature ensures a high level of medical care.

Meet Dr Ashleyn Smith

Dr Ashleyn Smith is a GP who graduated from her post-graduate Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery in 2018 through Deakin University, completing the majority of her studies in Ballarat, Victoria. Prior to this, she completed her undergraduate degree as a Registered Nurse, working at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Ballarat Base Hospital. She has additional qualifications in paediatrics through the Sydney Child Health Program (former Diploma of Child Health) She relocated to Canberra in 2021 to start her full time GP training, completing her fellowship in 2023, and has thoroughly enjoyed the friendly small-town feel that Canberra has to offer.

Ashleyn has a particular interest in weight management medicine. She is currently SCOPE certified through the World Obesity Federation for management of obesity and has a Professional Certificate of Medical Nutrition. Additionally, she is undertaking her Masters of Metabolic Health through the University of Sydney and the Advanced Certificate of Medical Nutrition. She is uniquely qualified, having lived experience herself in a higher weight body and enjoys the challenge of finding the right pathway for each individual to achieve their goals.

Outside of medicine, Ashleyn is a keen photographer, a gaming enthusiast and an ice-hockey supporter. She enjoys spending time with her husband, their two cats and a boisterous labrador and walking.

Meet Dr Laila Shah

We’re excited about the arrival of our new doctor at Gungahlin Medical Centre on Monday 03 February 2025.

Dr Shah is committed to patient satisfaction and quality care. She possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills which enable her to build rapport with both patients and colleagues. She has extensive work experience with both adults and pediatric patients and is dedicated to ongoing professional development.

Dr Shah has further certifications in emergency medicine, women’s health, dermatology, and mental health. Dr Shah has also been actively involved with the education and teaching of medical students.

Outside of work, Dr Shah enjoys spending quality time with her husband and 2 children. Dr Shah enjoyes arts, crafts and photography.
