Flu vaccine express clinics start this Saturday! Government-funded and privately funded vaccines ($25) are now available.

You may have a Covid-19 booster at the same time as your flu shot if eligible.

Eligibility for government funded flu vaccine:

1. All people 65+ years (25% stronger dose, covers all four strains).

2. Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy.

3. Children aged 6 months to less than 5 years.

4. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over.

5. People with chronic medical conditions predisposing to severe influenza, such as:
- heart disease (cyanotic congenital heart disease, congestive heart failure), coronary artery disease,
- lung disease (moderate to severe asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, suppurative lung disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic emphysema),
diabetes,
- chronic renal failure,
- chronic neurological conditions (hereditary and degenerative CNS diseases, seizure disorders, spinal cord injuries, neuromuscular disorders),
- immune compromising conditions (immunocompromised due to disease or treatment, asplenia or splenic dysfunction, HIV infection,
aged 5 to 10 years and are receiving long-term aspirin therapy.

For melanoma, remember ABCDE.
A - asymmetry. Are the halves of each mole different?
B - border. Are the edges uneven, scalloped or notched?
C - colour. Are there differing shades and colour patches?
D - diameter. Is the spot greater than 6 mm across, or is it smaller than 6 mm but growing larger?
E - evolving. Has the spot changed over time (size, shape, surface, colour, bleeding, itching)?

Did you know that 2/3 of Australians will develop at least one skin cancer by 70 years and 6% will develop a melanoma by age 85 years. The earlier the detection, the greater the chance of cure.

There is a new vaccine for the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and we want you to be the first to know.

Key points:
Available only to 60+ years.
Not currently government funded.
May be given at any time, but most benefit before winter.
Reduced risk of infection. Studies in those over 60 yrs show an 83% reduced risk of RSV associated chest infection and 94% reduced risk of severe RSV-associated chest infection through a single RSV season at 10 months follow-up. In the second year, the risk of infection was reduced by 67%.
Only one dose is recommended at present. The need for revaccination is being studied and may be recommended for ongoing high-level protection.
Risk of a severe RSV infection increases with age and with some chronic medical conditions (such as emphysema, diabetes and asthma see details below).

About RSV.
RSV can cause repeated infections throughout life as infection does not give long lasting immunity.
The RSV disease can cause a more severe infection and with potential need for hospitalisation in young children and those over 50 years.
In adults, RSV usually causes upper respiratory tract infection symptoms, such as cough, sore throat and nasal congestion. Wheezing, earache and sinus pain occur more commonly with RSV infection than with other viruses. Lower respiratory tract infection can also cause wheezing and breathing difficulty.
Infection with RSV may allow an opportunistic bacterial secondary infection. Around 30% of hospitalised patients infected with RSV also have bacterial co-infection.

Who is at most risk of having severe RSV?
Risk increases with age. The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) recommends everyone 75+ years receive the vaccine.

ATAGI recognises those with the chronic medication conditions are at greater risk:
- Heart disease
- Respiratory conditions including COPD, emphysema, severe asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis
- Immunocompromise
- Diabetes
- Chronic kidney disease
- Neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, those with spinal cord injuries or neuromuscular disorders.
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults have an increased risk of severe disease and hospitalisation due to RSV.

Side effects were most commonly injection site pain or swelling, fatigue, muscle aches and headaches. There were no serious adverse events compared to placebo.

Vaccine name?
TGA rules prevent us from giving the name of the vaccine in this email, we are only permitted to give you the name during individual consultations. We can only refer to it as an RSV vaccine. However, you can find the name and more details here in this ATAGI advice. There is only one RSV vaccine available for 60+ years at present.

2024 private flu vaccines ($25) are now available. Government-funded vaccines have not yet arrived but are expected soon. Another message will be posted once they arrive.

Express flu clinic at Crace will commence on Saturday afternoons starting this weekend. YourGP@Denman will run a Saturday clinic around mid-April; dates are to be advised.

What is in the 2024 vaccine?

Vaccines are quadrivalent, covering two influenza A and two influenza B strains:

-A/Victoria/4897/2022 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus
-A/Thailand/8/2022 (H3N2)-like virus
- B/Austria/1359417/2021-like (B/Victoria lineage) virus
- B/Phuket/3073/2013-like (B/Yamagata lineage) virus.
