⭐ Here's why this book is one of my faves.
🚺It’s a novel about the words of women that were deliberately excluded during the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary. The main character Esme begins collecting the discarded words. The slang. The domestic. The female and feminine.
🚺 What struck me is how many women's experiences have no language because the people defining language didn't think these experiences mattered.
⭐It made me think about matrescence - a word that was created in the 1970s but still remains largely unknown because maternal experiences have been systematically erased from historical discourse.
💜How many mothers are struggling to describe the entirety of their experience – and to be understood - because those words and experiences were never considered worthy of acknowledgement?
❤❤❤Language is power. It shapes what we think is normal, good, bad, beautiful and shameful. ❤❤❤
The lack of words articulating what I was experiencing as I mothered my children was one of the greatest motivators to write a book – and articulate the beautiful, brutal and silenced aspects of it all.
💜⭐These two are definitely worth adding to your reading list for 2026.
