IMMUNITY 😷

🌝🥶 They say winter is coming! Winter in tropical North Queensland…not really a thing, more just a fleeting few weeks where you have to put on a jacket and jeans 🧥👖 at night!
There is talk, as always, about the need for flu vaccination to protect against the flu virus. Whether or not you choose to vaccinate against the flu 💉, you can help your body fight off possible infections and give yourself a bit of an immune boost by implementing some simple dietary adjustments.
💪 Vitamins A, C, E, zinc, selenium are the micronutrients required by our body for healthy immunity. They can all be found in foods that can be easily incorporated into your daily diet 🥗🥪 providing immune support as well as a range of other health benefits that come with eating each of these foods.
Vitamin A – cod liver oil, eggs, leafy green vegetables, sweet potato & carrots, orange & yellow vegetables, mango, rockmelon, tomato juice 🥚🥕🥭
Vitamin C – oranges, lemons, kiwi fruit, strawberries, pawpaw, kale, broccoli, brussels sprouts, parsley, yellow capsicum, chilli peppers, rose hips 🍋🍓🥝
Vitamin E – vegetable oils (wheat germ, sunflower, safflower, corn, soybean), nuts (almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts), seeds (sunflower), green leafy vegetables (spinach, broccoli), fortified breakfast cereals, fruit juices margarine & spreads 🥜🥦🥬
Zinc – meat, shellfish (oysters), legumes (chick peas, lentils, beans), seeds (h**p, pumpkin, sesame), nuts (pine nuts, cashews, almonds, peanuts), dairy (cheese & milk), eggs, dark chocolate (70-85% cocoa) 🥛🧀🥚
Selenium – brazil nuts, fish (yellowfin tuna, sardines, oysters, clams, salmon, crab), meat (ham, pork, beef, chicken, turkey), cottage cheese, eggs, brown rice, sunflower seeds, mushrooms, spinach 🦀🥦🥩
There are other macro- and micro-nutrients too - for instance garlic, spices (turmeric, ginger, cinnamon), antioxidants (blueberries, green tea), and omega-3 fatty acids 🍓🥑🐟 that will assist in keeping you healthy, not just in the ‘flu season’, but all year round. If your daily diet provides variety, balance and moderation across all the foods groups, all the time, then your body should be receiving the nutrition it needs to maintain good health and vitality.
🚶‍♀️ Add in a brisk walk through nature 🌳 or along the beach for some winter sunshine (vitamin D) 🌞 and grounding, and you will give your immunity an even bigger kick!!

👀 We never take the time to pause and really see, the beauty of everyday things in our life. This morning I was out walking with one of my closest friends, which in itself is a beautiful thing, when I looked up and saw through a gap in the trees, half a rainbow whose arc matched exactly the curve of the hillside it lay beside. I called my friend back and pointed it out to her, realising the importance of not just noticing the beauty of something, but to actually pause for a moment and appreciate it.
🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️ We continued walking along the track through the Brandy Creek rainforest, chatting as we do, and again looking up I noticed another thing of beauty – large droplets of rain falling from the branches of a tree, reflecting the morning light and appearing as gems standing out against the dark background of the rainforest. Once again, I paused to marvel at this beautiful picture, as we commented on how the average person wouldn’t be able to capture this in a photograph, but we were lucky enough to be walking towards it and able to imprint the picture in our mind to revisit any time we wish.
🌅 Taking the time to pause and remember things such as these, allows us to look back on them during stressful times, and bring balance into our day. They remind us that there is beauty everywhere in life, if we just take the time to look up and around us, instead of looking down all the time. So next time you’re out and about, look up, really see what is around you and find the beauty in your day ❣️

😫 Stress is something we all experience in our day to day lives. It comes in many forms and in varying degrees: disputes with our children 😈, getting to work on time ⏰, finding the money to pay bills 💲, relationship issues 👥, work dramas 🤐, and the list goes on… We can be under the influence of more than one type of stress at the same time, which has a cumulative effect, increasing the impact of each stressor and making our problems seem insurmountable 🏔
🧐 There are as many ways to deal with stress as there are types of stress. The way you manage your stress can have a huge impact on the way it affects your health. If you don’t manage it and just hope it goes away, it can manifest in all manner of dis-ease and illness 🤢. Eating a nutritionally balanced and varied diet of wholefoods 🥦🍓🥑 and getting a good night’s sleep 🛌😴 are two ways of helping the body cope with stress, but there is more…
😂 There are some simple strategies for alleviating your daily stressors: deep breathing - stop and take 12 deep breaths, inhaling slowly, hold the breath for a count of 10, then slowly exhale 🌬; meditation/reflection in a quiet green space 🌳 such as your garden; practicing yoga 🧘‍♀️; and a favourite of mine, go for a walk barefoot 👣👣 on the beach where the minerals eg magnesium & sodium in sea water 🏝 have beneficial effects on mental health as well as for detoxification, and the act of walking on sand has a grounding and healing effect on the mind and general wellbeing; just being outdoors in nature can “blow away the cobwebs” and clear the mind 🧠 making you feel happy and more able to cope with what is happening in your life 🥰🌈

Mindfulness is such an important aspect of mental health and wellbeing which applies to everyone.
It's wonderful to see indigenous women embracing this issue and working to make it relevant to their people.
This is something that could be of value to all of us.

Indigenous women create singing, meditation and breathing exercises in three Central Australian Aboriginal languages to help improve mental health and address trauma in communities.

Happy World Sleep Day!!!

World Sleep Day is an annual, worldwide event, designed to increase the awareness of the need for good sleep health and a call to action on important issues related to sleep. Better understanding of sleep conditions and more research into the area of sleep is always at the heart of World Sleep Day.
Ageing and Sleep Health in our society is the message for this year’s World Sleep Day. Healthier ageing and a better understanding of how to sleep better as we age will help to reduce the overall burden of poor health on society.
This year the focus is on raising awareness about how important sleep is to improve and maintain your future physical and mental health and how the amount of sleep we need changes as we age. Most adults need 7 to 8 hours sleep while babies and children need even more sleep for optimal learning and play. This changes again as we reach our sixties.

KEY MESSAGES
• Getting good quality and quantity of sleep is the key to ageing well improving the odds of physical, cognitive, and emotional health.
• Getting good sleep in young adulthood and middle age reduces the risk of obesity and hypertension, protects against age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s Disease, and has been associated with decreased rates of depression.
• In some studies, regular sleep has even been associated with fewer signs of aging in facial skin and better tissue tone. Look better, feel better, be better.
• There is a lot to be said for giving good quality sleep a high priority in our daily lives.”

So when I'm not in my clinic helping people on their health journey and educating them about nutrition 🍇this is one of the ways I spend my time...at puppy school 🐹 aka Whitsunday Dog Obedience classes with my 7 month old Labrador Arlo. They tell me each week he's progressing, but sometimes I wonder 😟

Did you know that you may be able to improve your life and well-being by what you eat?

My name is Joanne Williams, I am a Nutritional Practitioner opening a new business in Cannonvale in February. I am a long time Whitsundays resident with an Advanced Diploma of Nutritional Medicine, and am also a qualified Mothercraft Nurse (non-practicing).

I believe in an holistic approach to health, and that the human body has an innate ability to heal itself. With the right education about nutrition, lifestyle and exercise, people can take a “hands-on” approach to their own health to manage digestive issues, high blood pressure, diabetes, allergies, anxiety, and any other health concerns they may have. You can improve your general health and well-being; and possibly reduce your need for medications through the correct nutrition and lifestyle choices.

As a Nutritionist and Mothercraft Nurse, I have a special interest and understanding of the importance of optimizing the health of prospective parents in preparation for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. I can advise on nutrition for both parents pre-pregnancy, for the mother during pregnancy, and for babies and young children. Your health now, can have a huge impact on the health of your children and future generations.
