Did you know that Australia does not have a national strategy to support children’s language and literacy before they get to school?

Today is International Literacy Day 👍 We support the proposed National Early Language and Literacy Strategy launched today!

The proposed strategy sets out the scale of the issue; describes what is happening on the ground, in different communities, and puts forward a framework for action. It is condensed into four essential priority areas – family support within communities; early education and transitions; specialist support, and knowledge production and dissemination.

We recommend that you read the proposed National Early Language and Literacy Strategy and offer your support where you can ==> https://speechpathologyaustralia.cld.bz/Proposed-National-Early-Language-and-Literacy-Strategy-WEB

It's Speech Pathology Week! Communication is key to socialising, learning, getting work and advocating for yourself. It is a basic human right. Although 1.2 million people in Australia live with a communication disability it is often an invisible disability. By raising people's awareness of communication disabilities we can start to remove some of the barriers that these individuals face.

Today is the start of Speech Pathology Week (22-28 August). The week aims to promote the speech pathology profession and how speech pathologists work with the 1.2 million Australians who have communication disability to ensure that ‘communication is everyone’s right’.

It's been a long time since I've posted here (my last post was dated pre-COVID-19 era!). Today, I will break the drought and share with you what I think is a brilliant website. The Curated Book List is a list of books selected by researchers, librarians and parents. The books are sorted into stages, to best suit the level of the reader. The books are also sorted into two categories: books that are recommended to be read aloud TO children, and books recommended to be read BY children. The former contain more complex language and themes that can be discussed with the grown up. And, if that wasn't fantastic enough, it is possible to locate the books in libraries worldwide via the WorldCat link. This is a real gem for a Speechie who is passionate about reading! See what you think! http://haskinsglobal.org/curated-book-list/?fbclid=IwAR1CegV8ORx5WDWoIrqzoDHUcSZJSiH0pQw4_Numy_acMaHP3pD365Dej18

I was just discussing this at a Kindy expo at one of the schools where I work. Does your child want to read the same book over and over again? Don't worry. It's actually helping them to learn and retain new words and information.

Children need the same information repeated to encode it permanently.
