I used to be an agronomist and crop scientist, also known as a plant nerd 🌱. I was all about teaching farmers how to grow crops, boost yields, and not kill their plants (mostly). Then, I traded in my overalls for scuba gear and became a salvage diver for 5 years - it was a real 'sea'-change 🌊. But, I returned to my plant-loving roots and thought I had it all figured out... until life had other plans. For the past 20-odd years, I have been involved in coaching, counselling and Trauma therapy. And even though I am well past retirement age, I still love what I do and will continue to work for years to come.

I am a hugger! I didn't used to be. I grew up in a family of non-huggers! Over time, and changes in society and I have found I miss hugs. I even ask for hugs. Hugs definitely make me feel good. Every day, our lives are filled with ever-changing feelings, reactions - good and bad. Some feelings make us feel great, others drag us down emotionally. Keep in mind, 'feelings cannot hurt us!' Staying Mindful of the 'Heavy Feelings' - Detach from them and try to stand back, remembering that 'feelings cannot hurt you.' Feelings are temporary. I try to analyse the feeling itself. The what and where of the feeling in my body. The more analytical I can be, the less impact it has. One question I ask myself is: 'What advice would I give to another in this situation?'

It’s especially. We all know the saying 'Flight - Fight - Freeze' about horrible events that leave us feeling powerless. But there is a 4th F in this process - FAWN. It is the People Pleaser Strategy.

When we talk about fawn, we’re describing a learned survival response to threat, just as real as fight, flight, or freeze. But instead of fighting back, running away, or going numb, a person appeases.
In other words:
“If I can make you happy, maybe you won’t hurt me.”

It’s especially common in complex trauma (chronic abuse, neglect, or unpredictable caretakers), where the person learns that the safest way to avoid harm is to placate and please the threat.

One of my favourite things to do is to travel. This photo of Mt Everest was snapped between clouds. We were so excited - and it's not even a good photo but a 'glimpse' of a place which I've read about since I was tiny. Our world is full of amazing places, cultures, and people that most of us will never get to visit, except via YouTube, books, or movies. When I feel stressed, overwhelmed or out of balance, my 'go-to' is travel videos on You-tube or cooking! What do you do?

99% of the things worth having in Life are found just outside your comfort zone. You will have to do work, take a risk, or simply trust your gut. Is it worth it? Almost always.
To have the life others dream about requires doing what others won't do! Step outside your comfort zone and live the exceptional life you deserve.

Put Yourself First. My goodness, it can take years for us humans to get that it is not selfish to put ourselves first, so long as no one else is put down or hurt in the process. I don't mean disregarding the feelings of others. If you say 'yes' when you really mean 'no'. If you are a self-proclaimed 'people pleaser', then to you I say, 'Stop it.' We only get one life - it is yours to live. You can be kind, be helpful and caring. However, when you say yes to someone, you are essentially acknowledging that their needs are more important than yours. If that's true, it's acceptable. Otherwise, take a deep breath and change your answer.
