Upper lip frenulums and breastfeeding 🤱🏽

Lots of new research has confirmed that these frenulums do not play a role in achieving a deep latch to the breast nor affect milk flow. If you have any concerns, please see an experienced IBCLC for a full history, oral and feed assessment to address your concerns. And if there are ongoing concerns with your baby’s upper lip frenulum after they are 1 year old, it may be worth seeing an experienced Paediatric Dentist 🙌

Repost from ✨

NewBaby101 p62:
In the majority of babies the upper lip frenulum (called the maxillary or labial frenulum) is seen uner the upper lip joining on to the upper gum. It is a feature of normal oral anatomy. Some practitioners, particularly some dentists, may recommend cutting an upper lip frenulum, often using a laser instrument, to assist breastfeeding. There is absolutely no scientific evidence to support this procedure. The upper lip only needs to rest in a neutral position, or slightly curved outwards to seal the breast in the baby's mouth, and to function in unison with the tongue and lower jaw during breastfeeding.

The appearance of the upper lip frenulum changes over time with growth and development. The frenulum gets smaller, thinner, and will insert higher up on the gum line as the first teeth erupt. By the time a child has permanent teeth the upper lip frenulum looks very different to how it looked as an infant. If a gap is present between the top teeth (dyastema), this is often an inherited feature of another family members' teeth.

The Australian Dental Association advise the upper lip frenulum should only be divided if problems arise with food becoming trapped there, and only when mature dentition is complete after 12 years of age.

The labial and buccal (cheek) frenula form the "scaffolding" of baby's oral anatomy and are present for that structural purpose. Unfortunately, misinformation abounds via social media regarding "Tethered Oral Tissues or TOTs" which can lead to overtreatment of "tongue, lip and buccal ties" and potential adverse outcomes.

"There is no such thing as a bad mother, only and under-resourced one."

This is true of breastfeeding or chestfeeding too. You aren't failing, you have been failed by a system that doesn't provide adequate preparation or support.

If you wanted to breastfeed, and have been unable to - or if you chose not to - you are still the best parent for your baby. How your baby is fed does not change that.

Parenting is hard. We need a team of caring supporters around us. ❤️

MEDICARE REBATES FOR LACTATION CONSULTANTS!

Please sign the petition, and share in your parenting and breastfeeding spaces. :)

"The Parliamentary Inquiry into breastfeeding in 2007 recommended that the Minister for Health and Ageing update the policy and provide Lactation Consultants with a Medicare rebate provider number to support all new mothers to breastfeed.
In 2023 this is still not an option for Lactation Consultants.
Currently Lactation services are not recognised with Medicare and only some private health funds help with a portion of the cost.
Optimum infant feeding is a fundamental human right. Breastfeeding has known benefits for both mother and baby, breastfeeding reduces public health costs, saves lives, and is environmentally friendly.
A Medicare rebate number would ensure all women can have access to expert breastfeeding support increase the health of all Australians."

Watch the baby, not the clock.

So many of my clients are sent home from hospital with a brand new baby, and instructions to breastfeed every three hours.

The thing that seems to get lost in translation is the three hourly feeds is the bare minimum. This is the longest you should let your newborn go without offering a feed.

Almost all newborns will need to feed more frequently than every 3hrs.

We usually expect to see a minimum of 8 - 12+ feeds in 24hrs.

Scheduled and timed feeds can create low milk supply and other feeding problems.

Instead, breastfeed responsively by watching baby for early hunger cues and offer frequent breastfeeds.
