Sooo CUPPING?!

Yes, it’s the treatment that looks much more painful than it is (although initially it is a little uncomfortable… it is worth it).

Cupping is often used in conjunction with acupuncture and may be applicable in a range of muscular and inflammatory issues.

We use glass, plastic or rubber cups and they are applied to selected points on the body by using heat or vacuum to reduce the atmospheric pressure within the cup, drawing the skin and underlying tissue into the cup much in the same way a plunger works on a blocked sink. And we know how satisfying that is so can you imagine how it would be with your body?

Cupping is traditionally used to promote peripheral blood flow and healthy Wei Qi (the Chinese Medicine version of the immune system). Marks on the skin that resemble bruises may be evident for a short time after cupping however this is a normal reaction and they fade relatively quickly.

If you have more questions about cupping, please give us a call;

If you’ve seen S*x and the City, it’s likely you remember Charlotte’s experience with acupuncture during her fertility journey! Likely your experience here will be much more calming.

Chinese medicine and acupuncture has a long history of treating and supporting women’s health. One of the earliest Chinese medical texts dedicated to gynaecology dates back to 652 AD which were written by Sun Simiao.

He emphasised the importance of supporting women’s health by saying “Now the present collection of treatments is arranged by placing the treatments for women and children first, and those for husbands and the elderly afterwards. The significance of this structure is that it venerates the root.”

By saying this, we see him emphasising on how beautiful the continuation of life is through women and how important our health is for this continuation.

Your fertility journey is individual to you and your body but you have support all around you, including here at Balance Acupuncture with Louise.

Today we are shouting out to our beautiful Principal Acupuncturist, Louise. Louise was first introduced to acupuncture as a patient and the experience was to prove so powerful as to inspire her to change career, leaving the busy maternity and nursing wards to become a Chinese medicine practitioner.

This life-changing experience came in her mid-30’s when a longed-for second child was conceived with the assistance of regular acupuncture treatments. Later, when her busy family life with two energetic children had been making day-to-day living difficult and Louise found herself existing rather than living, it was a series of acupuncture treatments that allowed joy back into her life.

We get a lot of FAQ’s before people book their first appointment. Many asking what to expect and the dreaded - does it hurt question!

So, does it hurt?

Acupuncture does not typically cause pain or discomfort. Most patients describe a slight, dull ache or a tingling sensation when the needle is inserted. This can be a sign that the acupuncture point is being activated.

If you do experience any pain or discomfort - please advise your therapist immediately! We only hope you feel calm and present during your appointment.

And what can you expect?

Your first acupuncture appointment includes a diagnostic assessment and preliminary treatment. We will implement a treatment plan which can include a combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment strategies, herbal formulas and nutritional and lifestyle advice.

Follow up appointments will continue with your treatment plan.

We’ve recently discovered the role acupuncture plays in supporting people suffering with chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting (CINV).

It is one of the most common and debilitating side effects, exerting a detrimental influence on the quality of life (QOL) of cancer patients and reducing their compliance towards conventional therapies.

We believe cancer patients are benefited by supporting Western Medicine’s approach with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). At Balance Acupuncture Brisbane we aim to keep our needle technique light and as pain free as possible.

Acupuncture could be considered a supplementary therapy for relieving symptoms of CINV
