⚠️ MEASLES ALERT FOR BRISBANE'S SOUTH ⚠️

There have been eight confirmed cases of measles in Brisbane's South.

The individuals spent time at the following locations while unknowingly being contagious in the past 8 days:
> China Airlines Flight CI45 from Auckland to Brisbane arriving at Brisbane International Airport at 9.20pm on Oct 8.
> Brisbane International Airport Terminal from 9.20pm to 10.30pm on Oct 8.
> St Francis College, Crestmead on Oct 9 & 10.
> Princess Alexandra Hospital from 9am to 10pm on Oct 11.

Members of the public who were in these areas, on these dates, need to be alert for symptoms of measles for the next three weeks.

The initial symptoms can include fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough and sore red eyes. This is followed a few days later by a blotchy, red rash which often starts on the face and then becomes widespread over the body.

If you have any of the measles symptoms contact your GP – it is VERY important to call the medical practice first if you think you might have measles, so that staff can take precautions to avoid spreading it to others.

Anyone born after 1965 who was in these areas and who has not been fully vaccinated against measles (two doses of MMR) should contact their GP.

For more information about the measles virus call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84).

Off we go! But before we do, a quick shout out to some important websites you should check out before you travel. Firstly is smarttraveller.gov.au - here you can register your travel details so that you’re able to be contacted in case of an emergency. They also have advice about the risks of traveling in your chosen destination and where to get help. The second site is fitfortravel.nhs.uk , where you can get information on which immunizations to have up to date before you travel, whether malaria prophylaxis is recommended and other general health risks to consider. It’s best to see your GP at least a couple of months before you plan to travel in case you do need any immunisations, as these usually need to be done at least 2 weeks before you leave. Keep in mind that some regions need more specialized vaccines so you may need to see a specific travel doctor instead. Currently there have been quite a few measles outbreaks and flu season is fast approaching so make sure you talk to your GP about these vaccines in particular! When was the last time you spoke to your GP before travelling?

We are travelling on a long haul flight tonight ✈️ and I’m always conscious of the risk of developing a clot in the legs (Deep vein thrombosis/DVT) and lungs (pulmonary embolism/PE - these can be fatal) when we do. Some of the things I like to do to help prevent this from happening are making sure I drink plenty of water 💧, occasionally walking around on the plane (beware of turbulence though!)🚶🏾‍♀️, doing calf exercises when I am sitting and wearing my flight socks 🧦 (not the prettiest little things but hey, If it helps, I’m all for it). Do you do any of these? Did you know there are a number of risk factors that can specifically increase your risk of DVT? Click the link below/in the bio for more information and Make sure you talk to your GP for specific advice before you fly!

Since the end of last year I’ve had a goal of losing all my pregnancy weight (I’ve had two babies and a bit of unhealthy weight gain in the first pregnancy which I never lost before the second 🤰🏾). Currently I am very close to achieving that goal thanks to changing my diet alone. However I’m not feeling fit or strong 💪🏽 because well... I haven’t been exercising (I haven’t got time, busy with work and kids, feeling lazy => all my excuses 🙄) and now I think my goals need some rethinking!

The current guidelines for those aged between 18-64 years old are:
* to aim for at least 150 mins/per week of moderate intensity physical activity 🏃🏽‍♀️ (so huffing and puffing but still able to have a conversation).
* 2 days/week of muscle strengthening activities 🏋🏽‍♀️ .
* just generally being active on most days.

So that’s what I’m going to work towards - slowly but surely (because it’s not a race! and I certainly need to build some exercise tolerance). Exercise is essential for maintaining a healthy weight, your wellbeing and reducing risk of chronic disease. What are your goals for fitness this year? Are you meeting the minimum recommendations? 🤔

Today this little fella and I went to his daycare to talk about “being a doctor”, as they are learning about different occupations 👩🏾‍⚕️. We played around with a stethoscope, thermometer, BP machine, bandages, masks and a few anatomical models and spoke about when we might go to the doctor. Seeing your GP is not only for when you are sick, it’s also important for when you are well to make sure you stay healthy i.e. preventative health such as cancer screening and immunisations. We also did some prescriptions not only for medications but also healthy eating, exercise, keeping hydrated, rest and meditation/yoga. These are essential for maintaining a healthy mind and body. I think the kiddies had a lot of fun and tbh so did I! 😄
