FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus to be Subsidised Through the NDSS from 1 April 2025

The Australian Government has confirmed that from 1 April 2025, the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) sensors will be subsidised through the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS). This means that eligible people registered with the NDSS will be able to access FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus at a subsidised cost, in line with existing CGM access arrangements.

Who is Eligible?
Eligibility for subsidised CGM products through the NDSS remains unchanged.
All people with type 1 diabetes are eligible to apply for subsidised CGM.
Some people under the age of 21 with rare conditions similar to type 1 diabetes on insulin may also be eligible.

How to Access FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Through the NDSS
To access FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus, eligible individuals must:
Consult an authorised diabetes health professional (such as an endocrinologist, credentialled diabetes educator, diabetes nurse practitioner, physician, or paediatrician) to update their CGM access.
GPs and practice nurses are not authorised to certify CGM access forms.
Health professionals are encouraged to use the NDSS Health Professional Portal to process CGM access updates quickly.
People are encouraged to update their details and create a My NDSS account to receive notifications when their CGM access has been updated.
Once access is updated, FreeStyle Libre Plus 2 can be ordered through NDSS Access Points (usually a community pharmacy) from 1 April.

Transitioning to FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus
If you are planning to switch to FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus, we recommend ensuring you have enough of your current CGM supplies to last until at least 15 April 2025. This is to account for any potential product availability delays during the initial launch period.

Important Information
Sensor lifespan: Each FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor lasts 15 days before needing replacement.
Ordering limits: A maximum of 3 months' worth of sensors (6 sensors) can be ordered per transaction. As with all CGM products, annual product limits apply.
Fault reporting: Any issues with the device should be reported according to manufacturer guidelines.
The NDSS Code for FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensors is 995.
For individuals who have a co-pay for CGM sensors, it will be $17.35 per FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor.
All CGM products have annual access limits which have been developed from the manufacturers recommended usage guide.
The FreeStyle Libre 2 Reader is compatible with FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensors – individuals currently scanning their FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors with a reader will not need to request a new reader if they update their access to FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensors.
FreeStyle Libre 2 readers can be requested at:

Omnipod users in Australia are being advised to put their DASH Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM) on airplane mode, following reports of battery depletion.
Insulet is aware of, and closely monitoring, customer feedback regarding instances where the Omnipod DASH® PDM battery is draining quickly.
On 9 November 2024 Insulet sent out advice to Omipod users to take the following action to address the issue. This action does not affect the function of the Omnipod DASH® PDM:
Activate Airplane Mode on your PDM in accordance with the User Guide.
How to turn Airplane Mode on:
Press and hold the Power button until a screen appears with Airplane Mode option.
Tap Airplane Mode to toggle it to ON.
As always, ensure you have a backup insulin delivery plan in place in case of emergency. If you have any questions, please call the Omnipod customer support team on 1800 954 074.

We received an important notification from Abbott FreeStyle that we wanted to share with you.

iOS 18 is coming soon and includes a new feature that allows users to apply a lock to apps using Face ID, Touch ID, or the device password. It also lets users hide any of their apps, so they don’t show up on their home screen.

We are bringing this to your attention because when an app is locked or hidden, notifications will not be received – even from the FreeStyle LibreLink or LibreLinkUp app.

Because of this, we do not recommend using the Locked and Hidden app features with the FreeStyle LibreLink or LibreLinkUp app so that you continue to receive important notifications including glucose alarms and alarms unavailable app notifications.

If you have locked or hidden your FreeStyle LibreLink or LibreLinkUp app, follow the steps below to unlock or unhide it.

How to unlock a “locked-only” app:
• Touch and hold the FreeStyle LibreLink or LibreLinkUp app icon from your Home Screen, App Library or Spotlight Search.

How to unlock and reveal a hidden app:
• Open your App Library
• Scroll down to the “Hidden” category, tap it.
• Authenticate yourself with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
• Select “Don’t Require Face ID”, “Don’t Require Touch ID”, or “Don’t Require Passcode”.
• The app will now be unlocked and/or unhidden.

As always, we recommend you disable automatic operating system updates on your mobile device and ensure to check the Compatibility Guide before installing a new operating system version on your phone.

I’ve taken part in Diabetes Australia’s “Health Check & Tech” event at Parliament House. It was great to speak with politicians, such as Sutherland Shire, Cook MP Simon Kennedy, about the essential health checks and technologies that support people living with diabetes to stay healthy and live well.

In NSW, 452,994 people live with diabetes, so this is an important issue for our community.

Through their campaign, Diabetes Australia is shining a light on life-changing diabetes technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices and insulin pumps, and the need to make these technologies more affordable, and not just for people living with type 1 diabetes.
