Before 1922, people with Type 1 diabetes had no hope of living. Fourteen-year-old Leonard Thompson was very sick and unconscious in a hospital in Toronto. His parents thought he would die. Then, Dr. Frederick Banting and Charles Best came with something new — a special medicine called insulin that had never been used on a person before.

The doctors gave Leonard the first injection carefully. After a few minutes, something amazing happened — his breathing became steady, and he slowly got stronger. For the first time ever, someone with diabetes could survive because of this new treatment.

Dr. Banting and his team didn’t want to make money from their discovery. They sold the insulin patent to the University of Toronto for only one dollar so that everyone could have access to it. Their kindness and hard work changed medical history and gave hope to millions of people around the world.

FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus to be Subsidised Through the NDSS from 1 April 2025

The Australian Government has confirmed that from 1 April 2025, the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) sensors will be subsidised through the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS). This means that eligible people registered with the NDSS will be able to access FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus at a subsidised cost, in line with existing CGM access arrangements.

Who is Eligible?
Eligibility for subsidised CGM products through the NDSS remains unchanged.
All people with type 1 diabetes are eligible to apply for subsidised CGM.
Some people under the age of 21 with rare conditions similar to type 1 diabetes on insulin may also be eligible.

How to Access FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Through the NDSS
To access FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus, eligible individuals must:
Consult an authorised diabetes health professional (such as an endocrinologist, credentialled diabetes educator, diabetes nurse practitioner, physician, or paediatrician) to update their CGM access.
GPs and practice nurses are not authorised to certify CGM access forms.
Health professionals are encouraged to use the NDSS Health Professional Portal to process CGM access updates quickly.
People are encouraged to update their details and create a My NDSS account to receive notifications when their CGM access has been updated.
Once access is updated, FreeStyle Libre Plus 2 can be ordered through NDSS Access Points (usually a community pharmacy) from 1 April.

Transitioning to FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus
If you are planning to switch to FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus, we recommend ensuring you have enough of your current CGM supplies to last until at least 15 April 2025. This is to account for any potential product availability delays during the initial launch period.

Important Information
Sensor lifespan: Each FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor lasts 15 days before needing replacement.
Ordering limits: A maximum of 3 months' worth of sensors (6 sensors) can be ordered per transaction. As with all CGM products, annual product limits apply.
Fault reporting: Any issues with the device should be reported according to manufacturer guidelines.
The NDSS Code for FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensors is 995.
For individuals who have a co-pay for CGM sensors, it will be $17.35 per FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor.
All CGM products have annual access limits which have been developed from the manufacturers recommended usage guide.
The FreeStyle Libre 2 Reader is compatible with FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensors – individuals currently scanning their FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors with a reader will not need to request a new reader if they update their access to FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensors.
