We love to try new ways of helping families at Protea Therapy! We know lots of families have questions they want to ask a speech pathologist, but for whatever reason, it’s not the right time to have their child assessed directly. What they really want is just a chance to chat with a speech pathologist without having to navigate waitlists and referrals.

Our senior speech pathologists, Dr Katherine Sanchez and Dr Jessica Boyce, are now offering 30- or 60-minute chats via telehealth that you can book online (see our link in bio!) Informed by research done by our colleagues in psychology, we want to offer families a quick, flexible way to touch base and get some clarity and direction.

You might leave with resources to learn more about developmental stages and expectations, ideas about which health professionals to seek support from, or a better understanding of funding options for your child.

You might have heard…

This year, our own Dr Katherine Sanchez and are re-running their popular workshop on Evidence-Based Oral Motor Feeding Therapy. Join Katherine and Holly for a day of cutting through the confusion and getting to grips with what oral motor feeding problems look like in kids, and what speech pathologists can do about them. Drawing on Holly and Katherine’s extensive clinical experience, research and science communication backgrounds, and years mentoring and supervising other clinicians, this workshop is grounded, practical, and focused on bringing the evidence to this tricky area of practice.

You can expect to leave with improved knowledge about paediatric feeding disorders, and a toolkit of assessment and management tools that will support your confidence and competence working with kids that struggle with issues like chewing skills, biting skills, cup drinking, gagging, and delayed texture progression.

We are braving the layout update to give you some good news!

It’s a new year, Dr Jess is back on board, and so we have IMMEDIATE availability to see clients with cleft lip and/or palate, speech sound concerns, complex feeding issues, late talking, and any client under one year of age in Brunswick or via telehealth. We accept NDIS self-managed and private clients. Dr Katherine and Dr Jess can also provide secondary consultations and supervision to speech pathologists!

P.s. Jaz doesn’t have immediate availability, but their waitlist is short; so, if your child needs support with complex communication, language delay, selective eating, or social communication, get in touch to go on their waitlist!

Hey, feeding therapists!

If you’re anything like us, you might find yourself having the same conversations with lots of different families. Hitting on the ‘just right’ framework to have these conversations can be really helpful (see: SOS’s Steps to Eating, the Thrive Pyramid), but one conversation that we kept having *without* an existing framework to help was how to navigate mealtimes when you’re trying to work on skill-building and nutrition with a child who has oral motor challenges! If you keep hearing feedback from families like, “there’s just too much to think about”, or “we WANT to work on chewing, but we also just need to get calories in”, you’ll know what we mean.

We worked out a way to frame it, and both families and the clinicians we supervise seemed to find it helpful. So, we wanted to distill this conversation into a handout that you can use with *your* families when *you’re* having these conversations (hopefully saving you some time, effort, and casting around for the right words.) We call it the ‘Two Goals’ Framework, and it’s simple but can be a great way to empower families and help take some of the pressure off.
