AMWU Victoria

AMWU Victoria The AMWU Victorian Branch represents workers in all areas of manufacturing across Victoria. This page is a community of union members and supporters.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union represents tens of thousands of workers in all areas of manufacturing around Australia, including: Food and confectionery; Metal and engineering; Printing and packaging; Technical, laboratory, supervisory and administrative areas; and Vehicle building, service and repair. The AMWU aims to ensure our members receive the pay, conditions, safety and respect they deserve at work. We fight for a fair deal for workers – both at work and in the community. We believe in a fair and equal society for all, with the provision of public social services including education, health care, and of dignity in retirement. If you work in manufacturing, we will work together to help protect you, your colleagues, and your rights at work.

State Secretary Tony Mavromatis, Assistant Secretary Tony Piccolo, and EV Project Officer Michalis S. Michael attended the Victorian State Government’s launch of the Energy Safety Roadmap at the ETU on Monday, 15 December. The launch was led by Minister for Climate Action, Energy and Resources, Lily D’Ambrosio, with Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Action, Sheena Watt.

A key focus of the Roadmap is licensing classification (Action 12), which includes exploring licensing options for trades working on electric vehicles. This addresses the important overlap between electrical workers and mechanics. It means all maintenance technicians working on EVs—whether light vehicles, buses, or heavy vehicles—will be covered.

This licensing campaign for mechanics is part of the AMWU’s ongoing EV Project. It aims to ensure workers have the right qualifications and protections as the EV industry grows. Stay tuned for updates as this important work progresses.

Essential workers at a major pharmaceutical company, CSL, are on strike today!

Members of the AMWU, UWU, and CPSU, who produce and package life-saving medicines for vulnerable Australians and communities worldwide, have today kicked off a strong, united front to vote NO to CSL's shoddy offer.

CSL's profits are soaring, with two executives having taken home a staggering $114.2 million in bonuses. Yet, the company cries poor, saying the "bucket is empty" when it's time for their workers' fair share.

These workers aren't asking for riches; they simply want better lives, more time with their families, and respect for their vital contributions.

Special shoutout to the member for Calwell, Basem Abdo MP, and our friends at Victorian Trades Hall Council for stopping by

Is your workplace looking for mechanical engineering or fabrication apprentices? We’ve got women ready.

This group has just completed our Melbourne Women’s Welding Short Course — learning core fabrication skills, building their first MIG welds and finishing the course by welding their own steel dice project.

Many of these women are now looking to move into mechanical engineering or fabrication engineering apprenticeships. They’re motivated, committed and have already taken the first steps to join our industry.

And we want to give a massive shout-out to Kangan Institute teachers Darren and Al, who were described by participants as “the best teachers I’ve ever had.” Their support, patience and skill made this course what it is.

If your workplace is ready to recruit apprentices, get in touch via womenintrades@amwu.org.au

Let’s keep building a manufacturing industry where women can thrive.

ASBESTOS ALERT: Imported Wind Towers Putting Workers at Risk

NON-Australian-made Wind Towers = PROHIBITED SUBSTANCES DETECTED

Once again, imported wind towers have failed, and asbestos has now been discovered in lift motors used during tower er****on.

This is only the latest in a long list of overseas-manufactured towers and catastrophic failures. In the last year alone, we've seen: Structural cracks — Golden Plains Wind Farm (2024); Structural collapse — BerryBank Wind Farm (2025); Blade component detachment — Golden Plains (2025); the tragic fatality at Rokewood Wind Farm; and now: Asbestos detected in imported towers.

"We can make Wind Towers here. Now is the time for Federal and State governments to invest so all future renewable energy projects contain local content." - Tony Mavromatis, AMWU Victorian State Secretary.

"This is yet another example of why we MUST manufacture these towers here. Imported products containing asbestos are simply not good enough." - Shawn White, AMWU Victorian OHS Coordinator.

The law is clear:
Asbestos imports have been banned since 2003.
Yet prohibited materials are still entering Australia through non-local wind-tower imports. Mesothelioma cases continue to rise — 684 cases reported in 2024 — and workers remain at risk.

Employers MUST ensure workers are not exposed to asbestos. They must identify, control and remove asbestos using licensed professionals.

Local content protects workers. Local manufacturing saves lives. Make it here. Make it safe.

Did you know that Thomas Kelly Lewis Engineering Works was among the first to win a 38-hour work week?

Now, this historic site is home to Flowserve, where our members make industrial and environmental machinery, such as pumps and valves, keeping the history of manufacturing in Castlemaine alive for 150 years.

Today, Area Organiser Paul Springer dropped in to chat with members about the upcoming EBA, District committees, and the importance of local manufacturing.
