Did you know?
30% of all strokes in individuals under 65 years of age are caused by smoking.

Cigarette smoking is one cause of strokes (damage to the brain due to problems with blood flow or the escape of blood into the brain tissue).
After you quit, your risk of stroke decreases steadily.

After fifteen years your risk is close to that of someone who has never smoked.

There’s no better time to get help stopping smoking.
Your GP can help.

Let’s talk….Prostate Symptoms

In its early stages, prostate cancer may not show any symptoms. That’s why it’s so important if you have a family history of prostate cancer to speak to your GP about when to start getting regular check-ups.

Early signs to look out for might be a difficulty in passing urine, a slow or interrupted flow of urine, frequent passing of urine and even incontinence, and waking up several times in the night to pass urine.

Advanced symptoms can include blood in urine, pain during urination or lower back or pelvic pain.

What can you do if needles make you anxious?

Here are some ways that might help...

1. Look away
You don’t need to watch and our Doctors and Nurses are highly skilled to ensure minimal exposure.

2. Take someone you trust with you and perhaps ask them to have the needle first. This can help reassure you in some instances.

3. Ask your doctor to numb the spot first. This is easy to do and they will happily oblige.

Remember, you are not alone and needle phobia is common.

Talk to your Doctor and they can help you with your concerns and help you to take those steps in your vaccination journey.

The theme for NAIDOC week 2025 is “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy”.

Jeremy Morgan Worrall explains “The artwork is a visual representation of the generational lines that carry through my mob. When I think of the next generation, I think towards my ancestors-Lucy Wright, Enoch Wright, Nonie Wright-through to my Nanna Audrie and my Mother Vanessa. Looking back gives me the strength and vision to look forward. Each figure in the painting is tied to family lines, like songlines, reflecting what they knew and what they passed on. The first represents lore, hunting, and tracking. The second reflects care, weaving, and love. The third shows the two combined, while the final two carry unfinished elements-symbols of knowledge and care in motion. Above them sits the essence of Country-swirling skies and a giant moon over Emmaville. It is by the fire, under these cool skies, where the next generation finds their
strength, vision, and legacy.”

The whole family can take part by starting a conversation in your home about NAIDOC week and completing Jeremy’s colouring in 🎨https://www.naidoc.org.au/sites/default/files/documents/2025-06/NIAA_NAIDOC%202025_POSTER_NANI_BW.pdf

Helicobacter pylori, have you heard of it?
Helicobacter pylori is a stomach infection caused by spiral “corkscrew” shaped bacteria,  hence the name “helico”bacter. The symptoms can be simple, like bloating or indigestion.

How do you test for Helicobacter pylori?

• Urea breath test – you will be given a capsule to swallow and a few minutes later you  will be asked to blow into a balloon.

• Stool antigen test – where a stool sample is tested for signs of the bacteria.

• Gastroscopy – rarely, helicobacter is diagnosed incidentally during this test.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)... have you heard of it?

BPPV is a common disorder of the inner ear with symptoms including dizziness, vertigo, unsteadiness and nausea.

BPPV occurs when crystals that are usually located in inner ear become dislodged and collect in another part of ear system.

As your head moves, these crystals move and send incorrect messages to your brain and then to your eyes. These messages can cause you to feel a spinning or dizzy sensation.

If you’re suffering any of these symptoms, talk to your Caroline Springs Doctor to get treatment and support.

Let’s talk about the impact writing down your feelings can have on your mental health.

Journaling, writing poetry or just simply writing down how you feel can help to improve your mood.

Seeing the words on the page may help you prioritise your problems, fears, and concerns, enable you to track and recognise triggers and learn ways to better control them.

It can also help you to be able share how you’re feeling with family, friends or health professionals so you can get the help and support you deserve.

Why not try this tonight and see how much clearer your mind is in the morning.

Sleep – it’s one topic of conversation for parents, work colleagues and friends alike that everyone can have input in. It can determine so much of the quality of our day-to-day functioning. Sleeping well can make us feel more alert, energised and better able to concentrate and perform our daily tasks, whereas poor sleep leaves us tired, anergic, unable to concentrate, and prone to accidents, especially while driving.

If you’ve ever spent a night tossing and turning, you’ll know that the outcome can be a day feeling groggy with brain fog… and a touch of grumpiness to match. Getting enough sleep each day is one of the most important things you can do for your health and wellbeing.

Our sleep blog in our Let’s Talk series will give you an insight into symptoms of insomnia and the importance of making sure quality sleep is high on your agenda...

Have you heard of “White Coat Syndrome”?

White Coat Syndrome is when you experience a spike in blood pressure when visiting a Doctors surgery and for approximately 1 in 5 people, this anxiety is very real.

For some of us, heading to the Doctors is a reassuring time where we feel we are taking proactive measures with our health. If you’re someone who has anxiety around Doctors visits though, there are things you can do to ensure your visits aren’t as stressful.

1. Make your appointment at a time where you know you’re at the least stressed. This could be after breakfast or at the end of the day after work, so you don’t feel rushed.

2. Bringing along a supportive family member or friend can ease anxiety as they can keep you chatting and distracted in the waiting room, whilst still offering the support you need.

3. Breathe!
Learning some breathing exercises can be a good way of acknowledging the fear and helping to push through in a controlled way.

4. Be honest about your anxiety
You’ve made a doctor’s appointment to talk about the state of your health — and mental health is a part of that picture. We want to know how you’re feeling.

You can also let us know when you book your appointment so we can help manage it from the moment you walk through our doors.

We’re here to help.
