Remedial Massage Therapy Available at 🙌🏼
Welcome to the Compass team Giacomo Stevanato! 💜🧭

We are excited to announce the addition of Remedial Massage to the services we provide at Compass Allied Health!

More about Giac:

I am a qualified remedial massage therapist and sports trainer, and I am currently studying a Bachelor of Exercise Science. I first entered this field after completing my Diploma of Remedial Massage at Victoria University. Since then, I have worked with the Western Bulldogs in the AFL as well as a private chiropractic clinic and a Sports Medicine clinic.

My passion for injury management and recovery comes from playing soccer all my life and having had my fair share of injuries. Because of that, I know what it’s like to go through rehab, and I love helping others get back to doing what they love, whether it is sports, training, or just moving better. In addition to sports, other areas of professional interest include lower back and neck pain as well as management and recovery to complement an individual’s gym program.

Outside of work, I am passionate about sports, whether it’s soccer, running, or hitting the gym. I also enjoy spending time outdoors at the beach, hiking, or bushwalking around the Mornington Peninsula.

To book an appointment with Giac, please contact us via either Insta message or calling us during our business hours from 8:00am-6.00pm Monday to Friday.

📣 MEDICARE ANNOUNCEMENT 📣

Great News in Australia for those needing Exercise Physiology

Young people with complex neurodevelopmental disorders to access exercise physiology services

The exercise physiology services will be provided face-to-face, video, phone and through time tiered case conferences. The new codes will be available from July 1, 2025.

“We deeply appreciate the work of the MBS Review Taskforce on primary care,” Smith said.

“This development has come through comprehensive consultation and understanding of the value of the work of Accredited Exercise Physiologists in the health sector.

“On behalf of our members, we will continue to work with the Department of Health and Aged Care to get the best outcomes for health care across the country.”

From 1 July 2025, Accredited Exercise Physiologists will be eligible to render MBS services using face-to-face items 82030 and 82035, video items 93033 and 93036, and phone items 93041 and 93044. Accredited Exercise Physiologists will also be eligible to participate in time tiered case conference services 82001, 82002 and 82003.

These changes were endorsed by the MBS Review Taskforce following consultation and recommendation by the Allied Health Reference Group as per the Report from the MBS Review Taskforce on Primary Care.

The department will prepare a factsheet outlining these changes and publish it on MBS Online in the lead up to 1 July 2025.

Do you ever wonder how you should be ordering your strength exercises?

A meta-analysis by Nunes et al. (2020) suggests that exercises performed at the beginning of a strength session may produce greater strength increases than those performed later in a session.

Interestingly, exercise order did not seem to matter for hypertrophy.

So what is the takeaway?

If you are training for strength and have particular muscle groups that take priority, it may be beneficial doing these exercises at the beginning of your session. If you don’t have any obvious priorities, then rotating the order from session to session may be beneficial for maximising outcomes.

However if you are training for hypertrophy, the order of exercises in your session is not so important.

EXERCISE FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS)

Exercise is a great way to stay strong, improve fitness, manage weight, and improve overall health and well-being for anyone!

Scientific evidence demonstrates that physical activity can reduce the symptoms that are associated with MS and improve outcomes at a cellular level through to the effects of quality of life.

Outcomes include:
• Reduced fatigue levels, and increase energy levels
• Improve cardiovascular endurance
• Improve balance and coordination
• Improve muscle strength
• Improve posture and flexibility
• Improve mood, confidence, and sense of well-being
• Improve concentration and alertness
• Reduce the risk of falls

Individuals living with MS frequently decrease their engagement in physical activity due to fears they may exacerbate their symptoms. Unfortunately, limited physical activity can result in the opposite outcomes listed above.
Tailored exercise programs prescribed by qualified allied health professionals such as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist or a Physiotherapist are a safe and effective method for individuals with MS to engage in.

Seek our help by giving us a call today and we can assist you with your individualised exercise program adapted to your needs, abilities, and preferences!

03/02/2025

We most commonly hear this phrase while fighting through the “burn” of working out and the soreness that can follow suit — both of which come with the territory of getting stronger.

But when does this motivational mantra become more harmful than helpful?

Through sports and exercise, many of us have been trained to push through pain at times. However, it’s important to listen to your body since pain is generally your body’s way of indicating that something is going on — whether that be exercise-related muscle soreness or true pain signaling an injury.

When it comes to your workouts, it’s important to listen to your body and know when something truly feels off — whether that something is muscle soreness that’s compromising your form, more muscle soreness than usual or actual noxious pain that might signal injury.

For example, if you’re still sore from doing squats and this soreness is leading you to do several sets of step ups in an incorrect manner, you start to see how a small, acute issue can quickly turn into a larger or chronic exacerbation.

Additionally, a big soreness event can sometimes be a sign that you’re ramping exercise up too quickly, which can also increase your risk of injury. Furthermore, we need to be aware when our body experiences discomfort that is actually true pain, most likely signalling an injury.

How do we differentiate between the two?

Watch out for pain that:
👉🏼Is very unpleasant and begins after a specific movement or while exercising.
👉🏼Is accompanied by swelling or bruising
👉🏼Significantly limits your range of motion or ability to complete daily functional activities
👉🏼Lingers beyond three days / becomes persistent
👉🏼Keeps coming back

This is when you want to take a step back and really consider what the cause of the discomfort might be rather than simply pushing through it. For instance, if you try to run on an ankle sprain before you’re ready to return to exercise again e.g. running, your’e at risk of hurting yourself even more.

We recommend you get your pain assessed by health professional to help you determine what caused it and whether it’s safe to continue with your exercise intervention.

Rest Between Sets: Rest for Maximal Strength Training

To effectively train maximal strength it is important to understand the interaction among training variables e.g. Sets, Reps, Intensity and rest periods between sets etc.
-
Research has indicated that “the rest interval between sets has a direct effect on the acute and chronic adaptations to resistance exercise programmes.” (Freitas De Salles et al., 2009).
-
For training loads/ intensities between 50% and 90% 1-Repetition Maximum it is recommended to take 3-5 minute rest periods between sets in order to achieve consistent numbers of repetitions over multiple sets, especially at higher loads.
-
Why should we take 3-5 minutes rest between sets?
The ATP Phosphocreatine system is the predominant energy system used for maximal strength training. It provides a limited amount (10-15s) of energy at a high rate which allows us to lift heavy weights initially, before it depletes and we start to fatigue. It takes 3 minutes to replenish ~85% of our stores, and 5 minutes to replenish 99%.
-
This is important to know because if we take the time to allow our body to replenish its ATP-CP stores, we can then be consistent with the amount of reps we can lift for multiple sets. Anything less than 3 minutes rest can result in residual fatigue late in sets resulting in a decrease in the amount of repetitions we can lift, therefore decreasing the effectiveness of your training.
-
Passive rest is recommended to allow phosphocreatine stores to replenish most efficiently. Other factors play a factor in recovering between sets like central nervous system fatigue. We’ll save that one for another time!
