Hippotherapy has a positive effect on the balance of individuals with multiple sclerosis and improves the quality of life. A systematic review and meta-analysis of the therapeutic effect of Horseback riding intervention show positive physical and emotional effects of horse riding in individuals with neuromotor development and physical disabilities. Horseback riding improved balance and gait of ambulatory patients with MS and helps the rider, by providing effective sensory stimulation and rhythmic anterior and posterior swinging motion. It also improves posture and balance.

It is important to note that in Hippotherapy The horse itself is not the tool. Rather, a licensed Physiotherapist leading skilled movement and treatment strategies while utilising the horse is the tool. A Physiotherapist with specialised training in Hippotherapy is able to provide treatment plans tailored to patients' physical needs and ability to ride. The therapist will manipulate the horse's movements as well as the riders position to attain functional outcomes in several areas; to read more:

Huntington disease (HD) is an incurable, adult-onset, progressive neurodegenerative disorder which presents with involuntary movements, dementia, and behavioural changes. It is reported that people with HD have reduced work capacity and lower limb muscle strength.
The exercises recommended for Huntington’s patients train different areas of the body, all aim to prevent falls, promote correct walking and body control, build coordination, and encourage a positive and confident attitude toward the body.
Physiotherapists can teach patients to use exercise to maintain a high energy level. The typical program includes aerobic exercise to improve overall health and fitness, stretching to keep muscles from getting tight, strengthening the muscles that are important to posture and keeping the body steady, and balance exercises.

There is strong evidence to support physical therapy interventions to improve fitness, motor function, and gait in persons with HD.

Did you Know type 1 diabetes meets the eligibility criteria for NDIS?

Physical activity provides an array of health benefits for individuals with type 1 diabetes though, there is restrictions to the level of physical activity unless there is an effective balance of insulin dosing and food intake to conserve euglycemia before, during, and after exercise of all types. Physical activity for people of all ages living with type 1 diabetes is linked with several well-known health benefits, including improved cardiovascular fitness, better bone-health and enhanced psychological well-being. Regardless of these benefits, most adults with T1D contribute less frequently in PA than their nondiabetic counterparts and may adopt unhealthy lifestyles that contribute to cardiometabolic risk. The prevailing barrier to PA appears to be fear of severe hypoglycemia, coupled with a lack of knowledge of effective strategies for hypoglycemia avoidance. While many obstacles to safe and effective exercise participation remain, present and future technologies should assist more people with T1D to become and remain physically active to improve their health and reduce the negative impact of diabetes on participation in competitive sports and activities.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition which have respective programs which are behavioural and educational in nature. However, most of these well-established programs do not incorporate physical activity and exercise as core elements even though Deficiencies in motor skills are associated with ASD and physical activity has been shown to reduce maladaptive behaviours with autistics. Meta-analysis and systematic reviews have concluded that physical activity has positive effects on social skills and behaviour in young children and adolescents with autism. Activities such as martial arts have been singled out as being particularly beneficial. Established programs such as TEACCH have been successfully modified, as research trials, to be more physical activity-based and have shown positive results.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by poor social and communication skills. Therapeutic interventions are behavioral and educational—normally delivered as structured programs. Several well-established ...

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is caused by non-progressive injuries in the developmental stages of the central nervous system, and which have serious repercussions on the quality of life of affected children due to the physical and psychological damage it entails for them. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this disorder and treatment is based on the improvement of symptoms which cannot always be achieved through conventional therapies. However, evidence-based studies have concluded that hippotherapy provides benefits at physical, psychological, cognitive and social levels in children with cerebral palsy, and thus it should be considered as a complementary rehabilitation therapy to conventional treatments.

Using animals for medical care has a long history. Animals have long been recognised for their ability to improve human health and well-being throughout nations and civilizations. Animal-assisted therapy is a concept that incorporates intentional and regulated interactions between individuals and animals to achieve therapeutic aims. This multifaceted method entails the active involvement of the sensory, musculoskeletal, vestibular, and visual systems. Various evidence-based studies have concluded the effectiveness of hippotherapy for conditions such as rheumatology, pain medicine, geriatrics, Parkinson’s disease, MS (Multiple sclerosis), ANS (autonomic nervous system), and Osteoarthritis.
