PILATES…. Named after Joseph Pilates.
“Joseph Pilates was born in 1883 in Germany. As a sickly child, he struggled with asthma and rickets, which motivated him to become physically strong. He studied various forms of exercise, including gymnastics, yoga, and martial arts, and became a skilled bodybuilder and boxer. His diverse training laid the foundation for the creation of his own system of physical fitness, initially known as "Contrology."
During World War I, Pilates developed his exercise method while interned in England. He helped fellow prisoners with rehabilitation through specific exercises focusing on posture, muscle strength, and flexibility. Pilates later moved to the US, opening a studio in New York City where his method gained popularity among dancers and athletes for improving strength, flexibility, and coordination while preventing injury. His fitness approach emphasized controlled movements, core strength, and body alignment.”
