In 1912, Henrietta Szold brought together a small group of women with a bold idea: women could change lives through action.

What began with sending nurses to Jerusalem to improve public health grew into a global movement focused on healthcare and caring for communities.

More than a century later, her legacy continues to inspire women and men to lead with purpose.

This International Women’s Day, Hadassah Australia honours Henrietta Szold, the visionary founder of Hadassah.

Dr. Lisandro Lucas, director of the Paediatric Oncology Surgery Unit at Hadassah, together with Dr. Tzlil Mordechai Chen, a pediatric surgeon, operating room nurse Vasim Masaroa, and anesthesiologist Dr. Miriam Rauschenbach, found themselves at the height of the alarm, in the middle of emergency surgery on a four-month-old baby.

"This is a condition known as an 'incarcerated hernia' and requires immediate surgery because there is a real danger to life," explains Dr. Lucas. "The situation occurred when a hernia, a narrow opening, formed in the baby's body. A section of the small intestine pushed through the opening located in the abdominal wall near the groin and could not go back inside. It was trapped in the area, exerting pressure and cutting off its blood supply. This is a very dangerous condition that results in tissue necrosis, causing irreversible damage and multi-system infection, which in some cases can even end in death."

When the alarm sounded, the team remained in place in the operating room located four floors underground and continued its work with composure and full cooperation.

"We heard the siren, but we were operating in a safe environment, so we continued the procedure that saved the baby's life. This is the only thing we saw before our eyes," says Dr. Mordechai Chen.

"Fortunately, the operation was successfully completed, and the baby recovered quickly. The tense parents, who were reluctant to be out of the house with her too much, felt safe here as well and will now take her home after recovery."

Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion visited the underground medical complex at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem:

“Jerusalem is proud of the exceptional medical, nursing, technological and operational teams who established this vast underground facility four floors below ground. Neonatal intensive care, paediatric wards and inpatient departments are all operating here with remarkable professionalism and humanity, despite challenging conditions. Hadassah’s patients feel safe and receive comprehensive, high-quality care,” he said.

Hadassah Director General Prof. Yoram Weiss presented the underground hospitals at Ein Kerem and Mount Scopus, where hundreds of patients are currently treated using advanced systems designed to improve the quality of care.

“Since Saturday, our teams arrived immediately-some straight from synagogue-and have been working around the clock in protected wards to save lives. It is a true source of pride to present the scope of our work.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited yesterday the victims of the missile impact in Beit Shemesh who are hospitalised at Hadassah Ein Kerem.

During his visit, the Prime Minister was accompanied by Hadassah Director General, Prof. Yoram Weiss.

Netanyahu met with Penina Cohen and her three-year-old son, David, both of whom were seriously injured in the incident while in a shelter, where she shielded him with her body.

In the tragic event, Penina lost her husband, Yossi of blessed memory, and her mother-in-law, Bruria of blessed memory.

The Prime Minister also met Orpaz Afriat, who is 30 weeks pregnant. Following the severe blast impact near her home in Beit Shemesh, she began experiencing labor contractions. She was evacuated to Hadassah Ein Kerem and rushed to the delivery room to stabilise her condition. She is being treated by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology team.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu:
"I thank you—brave and heroic women, mothers who have endured an extraordinarily difficult ordeal and who demonstrate the strength of our people and Israeli society. You strengthen us all.
I thank the Hadassah teams, led by Director General Prof. Yoram Weiss, and I know that you are in the very best hands here, being treated with devotion."

Hadassah Director General, Prof. Yoram Weiss:
"I want to say that alongside the sad moments, there are also many moments of pride. I wish to thank the Prime Minister for coming here to visit the wounded. That is not something to be taken for granted in these days. I also want to thank the patients who place their trust in us. Hadassah’s commitment over the years to the State of Israel—to caring for all patients across the country, and especially in Jerusalem—remains steadfast."

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog and First Lady Michal Herzog visited Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital yesterday, witnessing firsthand the hospital’s exceptional emergency preparedness and unwavering commitment to patient care.

During their visit, they distributed Mishloach Manot for Purim to patients being treated at Hadassah, bringing moments of warmth and encouragement.

Accompanied by Hadassah Medical Organization Director General Prof. Yoram Weiss, the President toured Hadassah’s fortified underground medical complexes, where patients continue to receive care in fully protected surgical, recovery and maternity units.

Meeting with medical and trauma teams, as well as patients injured in the recent rocket attack in Beit Shemesh, President Herzog commended Hadassah’s rapid response, professionalism and unity. He emphasised that patients at Hadassah “are in the best hands possible.”

Concluding the visit, the President said:

“When you come to Hadassah, you understand why the people of Israel trust this place. There is someone to rely on. Every time we visit, we are impressed and deeply moved. This is not the first time. We were here during the war, we were here after terror attacks, we were here in states of emergency, we were here for routine visits, and we were here during COVID. I want to thank all of you. Keep going. The people of Israel will emerge from this far stronger. And this place, I speak about it around the world all the time. If you want to know what Israel truly is, go to Hadassah.”
