Have you experienced the healing bliss of hot stone Lomilomi massage?

As the Melbourne winter lingers — crisp, sunny days balanced by icy winds — it’s the perfect time to nourish your body and soul.

This July at Melbourne Integrative Oncology Group (MIOG), we invite you to experience Lomilomi massage with Alice, a deeply restorative Hawaiian healing practice designed to support the body, mind, and spirit.

In our warm, holistic care setting, allow yourself to unwind with long, flowing strokes, gentle stretching, and the comforting warmth of natural oils. This nurturing modality is ideal for those navigating cancer care, recovery, or simply needing to release tension and reconnect with inner balance.

July Special: Each Lomilomi session this month includes the added benefit of hot stones — enhancing relaxation, improving circulation, and deepening emotional release.

At MIOG, we are dedicated to whole-person healing. Whether you’re supporting your cancer journey or seeking to relieve stress and restore energy, Lomilomi offers a safe, grounding space for healing & relaxation.

✨ Probiotics & Shipping – What You Need to Know! ✨

At MIOG, we stock high-quality, practitioner-grade probiotics – some shelf-stable, others requiring refrigeration. But don’t stress if your order arrives without a cold pack or feels warm to the touch!

💡 Here’s the scoop from BioMedica on their practitioner-only probiotics:

“If your ice pack has melted, or your products have arrived warm, you can rest assured that this has not changed the efficacy of the probiotic. The high quality probiotic strains we have selected in all of our products are stable for long periods out of the fridge, and many of them can even survive months or years unrefrigerated. We formulate our products in the knowledge that they will be shipped to practitioners all over the world and must survive the temperature swings typically experienced during transit for days or weeks.

In some cases, certain probiotic strains can be more sensitive to heat fluctuation, but don’t worry, in those cases we have included additional probiotics, above that stated on the label in each capsule to account for losses during transit and over the products shelf life, so that at the time of the expiry of the product., it will still contain the probiotic count listed on the label.”

Have questions about which probiotic is right for you? Our MIOG team is here to help!

Meet Jess – Our Wellness Hub Concierge!

Hey MIOG Community! 👋
We’re excited to (finally!) introduce Jess, one of the faces you might’ve already seen around the clinic. Jess has been part of the MIOG team for a few months now, and while we may be a little late with the intro, we’re thrilled to officially welcome her!

You’ll usually find Jess supporting patients during their mHBOT sessions on Thursdays—or other days when we’re lucky enough to have her! She’s also learning the ropes at Reception, so don’t be surprised if she greets you with a smile up front. 😊

Outside of MIOG, Jess is studying Bachelors of Business and Marketing 📚, works at a wine bar, and loves travelling ✈️ and hunting for designer gems in op-shops.

Be sure to say hello next time you see her around!

Heads Up – MIOG Clinic Closed.

Just a quick note to let you know that the MIOG Clinic will be closed on Wednesday, 16 July.

Our electricity provider has informed us they’ll be doing scheduled works that day, which may result in a power outage. This means we might be without lights, phones, internet, and EFTPOS, so we’ve decided to close the clinic for the day just to be safe.

Reception will also be closed, so there won’t be any onsite appointments or prescription pickups available.

If you have an appointment booked with Practitioner Tanya or Shala, don’t worry – it will still go ahead. Our team will be in touch to check if you’d prefer a video or phone consult instead.

We’ll have our phones diverted, so feel free to give us a call if you need anything – we’re still here to help!

Thanks so much for your understanding, and we’ll be back to business as usual on Thursday, 17 July.

🦶Foot Massage for Cardiac Recovery? Yes, really!

While MIOG is best known as an Integrative Oncology Clinic, did you know we also support patients with non-oncology health concerns?

This recent clinical insight is too good not to share:

📝 “Foot massage significantly decreases pain and anxiety in patients post-cardiac surgery when compared with a placebo group. Used alongside medication, it’s an effective part of recovery.”

✨ Whether you’re recovering from surgery or simply supporting heart health, massage therapy can be a powerful evidence-based tool in your healing journey.

👐 Our skilled practitioners Alice and Dion are here to help.

🍓 Winter Growth in Melbourne 🍓
Did you know strawberries are actually a winter fruit crop here in Melbourne?

You don’t need a big garden to enjoy the benefits of homegrown produce. One of our team members grows these vibrant strawberries in pots—proving that even small spaces can yield big flavour (and health benefits!).

✨ Why we love strawberries:
• Low-glycemic — gentle on blood sugar
• Packed with fibre, vitamins, and polyphenols (powerful antioxidants)
• Among the top 20 antioxidant-rich fruits
• Just 8 berries give you more vitamin C than an orange!
• Delicious fresh, or in warming winter recipes

If you’ve been thinking about starting a little garden, don’t let winter stop you. Small steps like this support wellbeing—and they’re incredibly rewarding 💚

📸 A simple child’s drawing? Not quite... 💛

This sweet sketch of Practitioner Tanya — complete with her signature “long hair” — was lovingly drawn by one of our youngest little patients during a consult. Moments like these melt our hearts, and this one is proudly pinned up at the clinic.

At MIOG, our patients range from just 2 days old to 89 years young — a beautiful reminder that cancer care and support span all ages.

As an integrative oncology clinic, we tailor our care to each individual, using a gentle, holistic approach that supports the whole person.

If you’d like to learn how we can support you or your loved ones, please reach out to our friendly team at 📞 (03) 9571 7498.

At MIOG, our practitioners bring years of combined experience in both the academic world and clinical practice as naturopaths, with a dedicated focus on integrative oncology.

We are proud, as always, to have Dr. Shala Rasouli—senior scientist and integrative medicine naturopath—representing our team at the ACNEM Annual Conference 2025 on ‘Integrative Cancer Therapies’. She will be presenting on ‘Supporting Treatments During Standard Oncological Care’ this coming week.

With a PhD in immunology and over a decade of postdoctoral research experience in cancer and tumour immunology, Dr. Shala Rasouli brings a unique scientific and clinical lens to integrative oncology care.

Her presentation ‘Supportive Treatments During Standard Oncological Care’ will explore evidence based strategies to support patients undergoing conventional cancer therapy. She will explore the integration of evidence informed complementary treatments alongside standard oncological care, with a focus on key nutrients and herbal medicines. Dr. Shala Rasouli will look at the current research, effective dosing strategies, and clinical considerations for safe use. Her presentation will also highlight potential contraindications and interactions, equipping practitioners with practical guidance to support patient outcomes while working collaboratively within oncology frameworks.

Shala has a passion for herbal medicine, nutrition and oncology support. Her approach is thorough, she creates comprehensive treatment plans based on the most current research and evidence in integrative oncology.

We can’t wait to see you on stage Shala and hear your presentation!

🥕🍊 Weekend nourishment starts here! 🍲

Tomorrow we are stocking up on fresh organic produce from our local Bentleigh Farmers Market – a fantastic community initiative run by East Bentleigh Primary School as part of their annual fundraising.

There’s no better way to support local than by choosing healthy, organic food grown right near our homes and clinic.

With this bitterly cold Melbourne weather, it’s the perfect excuse to whip up a pot of warming soup or boost your immunity with fresh, vitamin C–rich citrus. 🍋🥣

🛒 Next Market: Saturday 28 June, 2025 (tomorrow!) – don’t miss it!

Today is Rare Cancers Awareness Day

As beautifully puts it, “A person’s cancer is as unique as their fingerprint.”

Rare cancers can be especially challenging—not only because they’re less researched and have fewer specialists, but also because those diagnosed often lack access to resources tailored to their unique needs. Too often, they’ve had to rely on information designed for more common cancers.

At MIOG, we deeply understand the complexities of a rare cancer diagnosis. Supporting patients with rare cancers isn’t just part of what we do—it’s something we’re genuinely passionate about. Our integrative approach allows us to personalise care and provide supportive options that respect each individual’s journey.

A few months ago, our Clinic Director, Tanya Wells, had the privilege of speaking with the team at Rare Cancers Australia about how integrative oncology can offer meaningful support for those living with rare cancers.

✨ If you or someone you love is facing a rare cancer diagnosis, know that you’re not alone—and that your care can be just as unique as you are.

How Rare Is Rare Cancer?

With Rare Cancer Awareness Day approaching tomorrow, it’s important to reflect on the true impact of rare cancers.

While each rare cancer may be uncommon on its own, collectively they make up around a quarter of all cancer diagnoses in Australia. That’s huge!

That’s a significant portion of our community affected by a diagnosis that often receive less attention and fewer resources.

Rare Cancer Awareness Day is an opportunity to acknowledge and recognise all rare and less common cancers — and to shine a light on the unique challenges faced by those living with these diagnoses.

At MIOG, we passionately stand with our rare cancer community. Tomorrow, and every day, we’re committed to raising awareness, increasing knowledge, and supporting those impacted by rare cancers.

Let’s work together to ensure no one faces a rare cancer alone.

🌱 It’s garlic planting season again! 🌱

Our Clinic Director, Tanya, is not only passionate about integrative oncology — she’s also an avid grower of herbs and her own produce. This is the garlic harvest from her small garden last Christmas! 🧄

Tanya’s tip: “Just crack apart organic garlic into cloves and plant them flat side down — they’ll be ready to harvest by December!”

Did you know? Garlic is rich in antioxidants, which help protect the body from oxidative stress — an important consideration in health. 🧬

Studies also suggest these antioxidants may help reduce your risk of conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, supporting brain and overall health. 🧠

🌿 At our integrative oncology clinic, we believe in the healing power of nature, nutrition, and lifestyle medicine. From soil to science — it all matters.
