Today, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we paused to remember lives lost and stories that must never be forgotten.
We heard from Dr Simon Holloway from the Melbourne Holocaust Museum, whose words reminded us of the importance of keeping these stories alive. Rabbi Daniel Rabin guided us in prayer, and John Kraus recited the Kaddish, adding a moment of solemn reflection for everyone present.
Even if words cannot capture the depth of history, today we honour it — and the lives forever changed.
Never forget.

Today, our Emmy community gathered for a deeply moving National Day of Mourning commemoration. Together, we honoured the 15 precious lives tragically taken in the December Bondi Beach terror attack.
In a powerful act of unity and remembrance, 15 Emmy representatives — including our CEO, residents, family members, volunteers and staff — each lit a candle. Fifteen flames, symbolising fifteen souls, stood as a reminder that even in darkness, light will always rise.
Yaakov Glasman led us in heartfelt prayer, offering strength and solace. We also heard from Chavi Israel-Block, a courageous young woman who witnessed the events at Bondi and shared her emotional reflections with grace and bravery.
Music by Nethaniel Camilleri and Mendy Winner lifted our spirits, filling the room with comfort, hope and connection.
Residents, families, volunteers and staff stood side‑by‑side — united in grief, united in compassion, united in light.
Today we remembered.
Today we honoured.
And today, together, we reaffirmed: Light will win.

We’re excited to announce the installation of two new panels in the President’s Lounge, located in the Level 3 Gandel House lift lobby. Following the recent Annual General Meeting, our Board gathered here for photos to mark the occasion.
Featuring a fresh design that reflects our updated branding and logo, these panels celebrate leadership past and present.
Joe Krampel AM’s panel honours his remarkable tenure, guiding us through the development of Gandel House and the early days of the pandemic.
The second recognises our current President, Rod Nirens, whose leadership champions staff development and a strong, strategic future for Emmy.
Next time you visit, take a moment to explore this tribute to vision and progress.

Our community came together for an evening that truly lifted spirits—combining our volunteer celebration with the fifth night of Chanukah candle lighting. Bringing the Light was as much about recognising our volunteers as it was about celebrating the joy and strength we share. President Rod Nirens spoke with inspiration about volunteering at Emmy and warmly welcomed our newest volunteers. Music from Dov Farkas and friends filled the room as candles were lit, voices joined in song, and dancing followed alongside a wonderful spread.
We honoured Zvi, Marian, and Marcie Civins with the Heart of Emmy award, who exemplify intergenerational volunteering at its best. Rabbi Ronnie Figdor was also recognised for his generous support of our Jewish Life programs.
At a time when joy felt so needed, our Emmy community has filled this Chanukah with light and warmth.

A night to remember with Andrew Markus AO
Our recent event, What Could the Future Hold for Jews in Australia?, was nothing short of extraordinary. A full house gathered to hear Professor Andrew Markus AO deliver a riveting talk on census data, shifting demographics, and the future of Jewish life in Australia.
President Rod Nirens reflected afterwards: “I felt such pride in our community last night – Andrew was incredible and the audience were so engaged.”
This special evening was made possible through the support of the Emmy Monash Foundation, which strives to facilitate meaningful conversations within our community.

This month, we added the final piece to our vibrant intergenerational puzzle with Shirim K’tanim—songs for little ones—led by Mihal and Yochevet. Mums and bubs joined residents for an immersive Hebrew and Jewish music experience, filled with learning, movement, and a taste of Chanukah. Magical moments of connection brought smiles and naches, especially for residents who are proud grandmothers and great-grandmothers. Truly a family affair and one we will continue thanks to the generous support of the ERDI Foundation.

Yesterday we came together for the second night of Chanukah, standing united in spirit and community. Coming together is a source of strength and warmth for all of us.
Even in darkness, may the light of the Jewish people and our Emmy family continue to shine brightly.

15/12/2025

We are heartbroken and deeply shaken by the horrific events at Bondi Beach yesterday, where Jewish families who gathered to celebrate Chanukah were met with violence instead of light. What should have been a moment of joy and unity became a tragedy that strikes at the very core of who we are—our values of peace, faith, and togetherness.
Today, we grieve. We grieve for the lives lost, for those injured, and for every person whose sense of safety has been shattered. We grieve for a community that should have felt secure and instead faced terror. This is not just an attack on Jewish Australians—it is an attack on the shared sense of unity among all Australians.
It doesn’t matter where you are—we are one community today, standing shoulder to shoulder with our Jewish friends in Sydney. We are checking in with residents, staff, volunteers and visitors and will do everything we can to encourage a warm and supportive space to process this tragedy.
It is vital that we keep showing up for each other with kindness, compassion, and respect. If you need a listening ear, or simply the reassurance of community, please know we are here for you.
We will continue to embrace the traditions of Chanukah—a celebration that reminds us that even in darkness, light can endure. This week’s candle lighting events will go ahead as planned, with extra care taken to ensure everyone feels safe and supported. These moments together are more important than ever, as they give us a chance to connect, reflect, and draw strength from one another.
We are constantly reviewing our security measures on the advice of the authorities and the Community Security Group (CSG) and will continue to do so to ensure the wellbeing of everyone in our care.
May this Chanukah still spark joy and connection, even in the shadow of sadness.
Together, we will continue to share light, care for one another, and hold fast to the values that make our community strong.
