Dear Access inc Community members,

It is with both gratitude and reflection that we share important news regarding Access Inc, a disability educational service that has been part of our community since its establishment in 1987.

Access was founded by a group of parents of children with disabilities who felt their voices were not adequately heard. Initially conceived as an advocacy group, it evolved into a service provider, addressing unmet needs, particularly in the post-school phase of our children's lives.

After 36 years of dedicated service, Access has successfully fulfilled its mission of advocacy and vocational development. The landscape for individuals with disabilities has transformed significantly during this time, marked by increased understanding, appreciation, and tangible support through initiatives like the NDIS System.

In recognition of these changes and the evolving needs of our community, the Board of Access inc has made the difficult decision to wind up its services at the end of this year. This decision is based on the understanding that the current disability landscape has different and evolving requirements, and other services are better positioned to address these needs. Additionally, changes to the NDIS pricing model for 2024 will significantly impact on our ability to continue delivering services.

Please be assured that as Access concludes its services, utmost care will be taken to ensure that all current clients and their families are seamlessly connected with appropriate service providers. The well-being of current clients, families, and employees remains a top priority during this transition. Access’s educational programs will be ceasing on December 20th 2023.

In February we will be hosting a Celebration farewell to honor the wonderful history of Access inc. Details will be announced in the coming weeks.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all those who have tirelessly supported Access over the years, particularly the Gandel Foundation and the Pratt Foundation who have partnered with us in our endeavours. Your dedication has made a significant and meaningful difference in the lives of many within our community.
We thank you for your understanding and continued support during this period of Change.

The environment team set off to find some little hidden treasures. Not just the inviting laneways in Carnegie – Laz’s Lane and Rita’s way – full of stunning local art and beautiful plants.

We also learned about an amazing international activity called Geocaching. Using an App on our mobile phones, we were able to locate this sneaky little cache in Koornang Park. We are surrounded by 1000’s of caches which I’m looking forward to discovering on other fine weather days.

It’s not only about baking in the bakery course.

All the commercial sized ingredients needed to be broken down into smaller containers.

Flours, sugars, eggs are all sorted each week to keep the bakery running smoothly and efficiently.

Our raised garden beds have been very fruitful.

It’s been lovely picking our own organic herbs and vegetables.

Take a look at these very curly carrots but don’t judge a book by it’s cover.

These odd looking vegetables were sweeter than anyone could imagine.

The Environmental Team were very excited to be gifted a tumbling compost bin.

We learned about compost, what we’ll put in the bin and how to take care of it.

It won’t be too long before we will be creating our own nutritious soil to grow herbs and vegetables.

Access volunteer and artist Dinah Ninio hosted this week's Art Walk to her stunning exhibition of paintings and ceramics at Studio 11. The wedding series focuses on celebrating life's simple pleasures as well as major life-cycle events. We could all relate to the theme and having the artist explain her vision was the 'icing on the cake' in more ways than one! Do yourself a favour and visit Dinah's beautiful exhibition at Studio 11, Level 11, Owen Dixon Chambers East, 205 William Street.

Access had the honour of participating in a remarkable initiative led by one of our long standing volunteers, Helen. Alongside a team of enthusiastic bakers and Access participants, we successfully baked, packaged and labelled a grand total of 150 bags of delicious biscuits.

In just a couple of hours, all were sold, contributing to the fundraising efforts for Emunah, a charitable organisation in Israel dedicated to aiding children, women and the elderly who are enduring the burden of the current traumas.

It is during moments like these that the strength of our community shines through.

The footy may be over for this year but Access bakery is still kicking goals.

A mammoth task of not only baking 600 biscuits – Anzacs, Zebras and Ginger biscuits - but also packing, sealing and labelling for our loyal followers at Kehilat-Nitzan. Thanks for your amazing support. We hope you enjoy the biscuits.

The Board of Access Inc is seeking a new President to help guide the organisation as it continues to transform to support people with disabilities.

Access inc. will be closed for Grand Final Day, Friday the 29th of September.

Access catering class has had yet another successful session taking orders for a yummy vegetable frittata, and fresh salad with a honey mustard dressing.

One comment afterwards was “It was delicious and certainly exceeded my expectations. Equally as good as any café in the area.” Another win for our amazing catering team. Congratulations.
