International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and I am so grateful and proud to be a current alumni of Homeward Bound - an incredible program with amazing women working together to tackle climate change.

Today, 11 Feb, is a day that holds great significance in the Homeward Bound calendar, as we honour the invaluable contributions of women in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine). On this day, we mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a celebration that resonates deeply with our mission and vision. 🙌

This day is a testament to the power of nurturing women leadership, promoting equality, and preparing for the challenges of tomorrow. It's a day to encourage and inspire women and girls worldwide, recognising and celebrating their remarkable achievements in the fields of science and beyond.

At Homeward Bound, our vision by the year 2036 is to create a diverse global leadership community comprising 10,000 women and non-binary individuals with backgrounds in STEMM. Currently, our alumnae network encompasses over 700 remarkable individuals hailing from 90 different nationalities. Together, they represent the epitome of excellence, collaboration, and innovation. 💪🌟

Feeling very grateful for the bounty sent our way this morning.

Very concerning times ahead.
"Any increase in water temperature can kill off marine habitats, such as sea grass and kelp, and as a result, disrupt the food chain."

Our Kelp Lab in Tilba Tilba has seed stock from along the east coast and we hope to work with researchers and government to help our declining kelp forests.

A marine heatwave will likely hit Tasmania just as seafood operators are harvesting oysters, abalone, and salmon for the Christmas dinner table.

Such beautiful footage of our underwater forests. We want to understand and learn more about Australia’s unique seaweeds.

Yesterday was World Oceans Day.
For most of my career I have worked in or for our oceans to try and make a difference.
Here is the story of Sea Health Products so far - still a way to go but we are heading in the right direction.
By growing Ecklonia radiata we hope to be able to contribute to kelp restoration projects and establish kelp farming in Australia in the near future.

We did it!! We managed to go from Sorus to Sea!
That means … we went diving and collected sorus (kelp reproductive tissue), we took it back to our Kelp Lab in Tilba, NSW, we grew baby kelp on twine and then we put the babies on rope and did trials in the ocean. We had a few failures- but here are some pics of our success.

With thanks to Safe Seaweed Coalition for assistance with funding and to NSW DPI for our permits.

Time to celebrate - we are very thrilled with this result and look forward to undertaking more trials for kelp restoration and kelp farming in the near future.

We’re please to be an industry partner of the MBCRC, and grateful for their support of our small business.
