Most people think pain is just about muscles, joints, or posture.
But what if the real issue is your sensory system?
When your brain isn’t getting clear, accurate sensory input from your body, it uses pain and tension as a warning sign.
Here’s why clearing up your sensory map might be the key to moving freely again.

Your sensory system is like your brain’s GPS & security system.
It constantly gathers information from your eyes, inner ears, skin, joints, and muscles.
When that info is clear and accurate, your brain feels safe to move you freely.
When parts of that input are blurry or missing from old injuries, stress, or lack of use your brain’s default is to tighten you up and create pain to keep you ‘safe.’
The real problem often isn’t the muscle or the joint it’s the map your brain is using to protect you.

The solution is by updating our movement map of your body. Show your brain to trust your body to reduce how much brain protection it needs to provide.
This will come from giving clearer information from your body (proprioception), visual and balance systems.

Stop chasing tight muscles and pain that are reoccurring and let's look deeper.

This is exactly how I help my clients.

How full is your THREAT bucket?

When your nervous system is constantly scanning for danger, it burns through energy just trying to keep you safe. That’s survival mode. But when you reduce perceived threat in your system you free up capacity. You feel calmer, have less pain, move freely again and actually handle more stress without your symptoms coming flooding back.

YOUR BODY REMEMBERS:
Your past injuries could be influencing
your current pain

➡️ THE BODY KEEPS SCORE
The body has a remarkable ability to "remember" past injuries through a process called nociception (detectors of threat). This memory is stored in the nervous system and helps the body react more quickly to prevent further damage. While the body may heal from physical wounds, the pain and discomfort associated with past injuries can linger, sometimes influencing movement patterns and posture. This is why we may still experience sensitivity or weakness in areas once injured, even long after healing has occurred.

✅ RECALIBRATE
Correcting old injuries can significantly alleviate pain by addressing the root causes of discomfort, such as misalignments, scar tissue, or weakened muscles. Over time, these unresolved issues can lead to chronic pain, as the body compensates for imbalances. By treating the injury, the body can restore proper function, reduce stress on surrounding tissues, and promote healing.

📝 CHECK YOURSELF
Note down the injuries you've had over the years and see if you have any pain, soreness, restricted movement on that side of your body.

✅ Try this!
Try touching your toes with straight legs, then rub or scratch an old scar or injury site. Check if your flexibility improves or worsens—if a change occurs this indicates your nervous system still holds stress from the past injury. (If toe touch doesn't change try some other movements to see how it affects you)

How lymph flow can help your concussion recovery

1️⃣ Inflamed brain 🔥

Following a concussion, a key part of recovery is inflammation to help the healing process.

However, when this process is prolonged, this is where complications can begin such as further damage, delayed recovery or cognitive issues.

People who have had a concussion know this feeling of reduced appetite, can't think straight, or a feeling of pressure in their head (feel like their head is heavy like a bowling ball).

✅ Lymphatic flow and inflammation 🔥

The lymphatic system is one of our main detoxification pathways. Lymph plays a key role in our immune system, tissue repair and helps remove waste, toxins and excess fluid from the body.

When our lymph flow becomes sluggish, inflammation increases in the body because waste products build up. Common symptoms of this can be restless sleep, headaches, neck tension, swollen glands and brain fog.

2️⃣ A missing piece of the puzzle 🧩

The system that directly surrounds the brain and removes waste is called the glymphatic system.

But as it is not directly related to the Lymphatic system, lymph is often overlooked in concussion recovery. Our lymph requires us to move and breathe to flow efficiently.

We know concussion effects our breathing and we're told to rest after a concussion. It's easy to see how lymph flow is affected.

✅ Transformative effects

After a concussion an inflammatory response is triggered not just in the brain but the body as well. If the lymph flow slows it begins to pool which further increases inflammation in the body. By ensuring a client's lymph flow is moving well, they begin to feel a lot better due to the decreased pressure in their head and inflammation begins to go down. They also see a dramatic change in their sleep and reduced headaches.

Anyone who tells you balance exercises will help you recover from a concussion is holding you back

What you should ACTUALLY be doing to support your recovery, backed by the many Rugby league players I have seen transformed after our 1:1 session's.

1️⃣ Many balance exercises are recommended for post-concussion and vertigo recovery, but head trauma disrupts the relationship between the visual and vestibular systems that control balance. Practicing balance too early in recovery can create further chaos and strain on the system.

✅ To speed recovery, reliable information must return to the brain to restore safety and organisation. A good starting strategy is infinity walks, demonstrated in the video above. This exercise coordinates both sides of the brain while keeping the eyes fixed on a target, stabilising the visual system and allowing the body to rotate independently of the eyes, which is crucial for an optimal walking gait.

2️⃣ Head trauma affects the autonomic nervous system, which regulates our heart rate, breathing, and stress levels. This disruption can lead to shallow mouth breathing, increasing stress even when you may not feel it. Balance exercises can worsen this as a lot of people mouth breathe and then adding further stress on the system.

✅ Focus on your breath to send calming signals to your brain. Lie on your back with your hands on your belly, breathe through your nose into your belly, hold for 3 seconds, then exhale slowly. Breathe normally for 30-60 seconds and repeat three times. This can lower your heart rate by 5-10 beats, activating the relaxation response. Practice for a few minutes daily and note how you feel.

3️⃣ Balance exercises are not bad, they're actually an amazing training and rehab tool but they shouldn't be one of the first things we use for recovery, we should be using them in the later stages of recovery and for rebuilding.

✅ The fastest route to recovery from a head injury is to restore the connections that have been disrupted which I can help accelerate. Restoring safety to your system then allows these rehab exercises to better tolerated aiding you back to your pre-injury state.

BEYOND THE HIT
Concussion and it's impact on the nervous system
1️⃣ Persistent headaches- Headaches are a common side effect of a concussion, however they should only last up to 4 weeks.
If you're still experiencing ongoing headaches and requiring pain relief after this time is a red flag and a sign that there is something slowing your recovery that needs to be addressed.

2️⃣ Leaky brain leaky gut- We have a gut brain connection and when we experience a head injury this disrupts our Vagus nerve signalling of the gut brain pathway. Signs of this are-
New food sensitivities
Gas or bloating after eating
Reduced appetite

3️⃣ Visual system- Concussion disrupts eye coordination which is detrimental because everytime we move, our eyes move as well.
Our eye movements play a role in how muscles activate when we move.

So weeks after a concussion you now have back pain for example which can be due to your eyes.
Try this
Put your hands on the back
of your neck right at the top and move your eyes left and right and feel how the muscles move 👀

Pass this on
If you or someone you know has suffered a TBI (traumatic brain injury), concussion or whiplash injury and is still suffering the side effects pass this post on.
We can set up a 10 minute exploration call to see how I can help.

The safer your brain perceives you are the more robust your health becomes 😄

Do you remember a time when everything felt easy?
Then you got injured or were concussed, had a stressful time or experienced trauma of some kind. Since then nothing has seemed as easy or felt the same?
From sleep issues, constantly hurt, unresolved injury, stomach problems etc. 🤕

No matter how good you eat, sleep, meditate or have tried many therapies to help get you back to where you were pre injury/trauma something is still missing? 🤷‍♂️

When our brain's bucket of perceived threats gets too full, then our body starts to feel like it's working against us by producing these symptoms of pain, lack of motivation, sleep issues or stomach distress etc.

However it's actually trying to protect us. 🧠

Our brain doesn't care that we want to run a marathon, lift the heaviest weight possible, or run a successful business and so on, its priority is survival and untill we prove to the brain otherwise, these protective strategies will keep "protecting" us.

However once we start to prove to the brain, with signals of safety, our health and wellness begin to follow and things start to move in a positive direction.

If you have felt this way for a while or know someone who's experiencing this DM me and we can setup a 10 minute exploration call to see how I can help 👍

"Our brain loves sensory information to keep us safe" Dr Olivia Lesslar 🙌

When serious trauma has occurred like in this client's case requiring spinal fusion, there is a lot of sensory threat (nervous system running on high alert) that has occurred which affected a range of things from pain lifting their arms, constant feeling of holding their head up, not able to complete daily tasks like open a jar or hang washing and lye down comfortably to rest.

When we downregulate some of these threat signals (working through injury traumas) by reintegrating areas of the nervous system with specific inputs that have been working suboptimal. This allows for more bandwidth in the nervous system to not be on such high alert all the time (sending constant pain signals, excess tension etc).

In this client's case after 40mins we were able to have her-
- Lift her arms up pain free
- Open a jar without assistance
- In the coming days she let me know she could lay on her side for the first time in a year 🤯
- Reduced sensation of feeling like they're holding their head up

If you know anyone experiencing issues that haven't been able to get relief share this with them.

Have you been experiencing long term muscle tension, pain, unresolved injuries, worried to move or lift something in case you hurt yourself etc. even with extensive treatment?

If we place more emphasis during treatment on testing with Square1 rather than guessing and engage the systems that produce these outputs noted above (muscle tension, pain and unresolved injuries, worried to move or lift something in case you hurt yourself etc) then we start to see these issues dissolve or dramatically improve in sometimes as little as 10mins or sometimes a couple of sessions

If you're looking to try a different way to resolve your problem and get back to normal get in touch for more info or to book your session 📈⛹️🤸🏃🏼‍♀️

It's great getting feedback like this! Lawson is 14yrs old and had been getting nothing but poor news on how his body was moving and the back pain he had been having. So to have him say he wasn't in pain and a well respected Chiropractor give this kind of feedback means a lot when I only got to work on him for 20mins ❤️
Sensory information we receive (ie the environment were in) determines what movements and pain the brain feels it needs or is willing to produce depending on how safe or threatened it feels with this information
When we us Square1 we can test and correct these perceived threats with specific sensory inputs which will reduce pain, restore movement and increase performance 👂👁️‍🗨️🧠🏋️🤸🏃
