Dry needling vs Acupuncture
The technique involved with dry needling is inserting an acupuncture needle into a trigger point in the muscle.
A Myofascial trigger point is ‘a hyper-irritable spot in skeletal muscle that is associated with a hypersensitive palpable nodule in a taut band’ (Dommerbolt 2006). In easier terms, an area in a muscle that is overactive and sore to touch.
Acupuncture needles are incredibly thin needles and are inserted deep into the muscle which can cause a local twitch response. This is the muscle contracting and relaxing and can sometimes cause a dull ache. You may also feel the area of pain referral.
The muscle can continue to release and it’s not uncommon to feel tired over the next day or so, after the needle has been removed.
This is in comparison to the traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture which is based on inserting needles into specific points of the body to allow the free flow of energy, known as ‘Qi’, through the body, allowing balance between Yin and yang.
