Such an amazing initiative for Speech Pathology Australia. With my work in the courts as a Witness Intermediary, I see people that are in the system and have such a reduced communication system.

Together, SPA are working to promote justice reform and reduce the over-use of prisons, while addressing the cycle of disadvantage that often leads to involvement in the justice system. Research shows that the majority of people in the justice system face significant communication challenges, and speech pathology is crucial in meeting these needs. By supporting individuals in improving their communication skills, we can help change the trajectory of their lives and create more equitable outcomes.

Communication is a fundamental human right, and the first 5 years of a child’s life are crucial for speech, language, and communication development. These early skills lay the foundation for success in school, work, and relationships later in life.

Yet, 1 in 5 children in Australia who start school are not developmentally on track with their communication skills. Children who start behind often stay behind.

Early access to speech pathology can change lives, improving outcomes and reducing long-term costs for individuals, families, and communities.
