It’s not about doing more reps, it’s about doing them better.
I played a lot of sport as a kid, but no one really taught me how to do it well.
Since studying DNS I have learnt so much about human movement.
About my own movements, it's been a wake up call and a gift.

Have a hip problem?
Are you looking at your foot? your ankle ? Your ribcage or thoracic spine?
It’s all connected.
Don’t get lots in focusing too small!

If you're experiencing hip problems, it's essential to consider the entire kinetic chain, not just the hip itself. If we narrow our focus, it can lead to an incomplete understanding of the problem.

Make sure your care provider is taking your whole person into the picture.

What's that song we learnt as kids...?
"The foot bone's connected to the knee bone, the knee bone's connected to the ..hip bone"
Something like that..! How did we forget how interrelated our body is !!

If I envision myself at 90, I want to feel vibrant and full of life.
I want to be able to get up and off the floor with relative ease, and I want to move with confidence. When I see it in the older population it is truly inspiring.

My son and I observed a man walk into the gym last week, quite upright, a slight spring in his step, off to use weights. We overheard the conversation at the front desk, he is 2 weeks off his 100th birthday.

We were both so in awe of this man.
I want to be him when I grow up.

We've been taught to "sit up straight" but real posture comes from strength, mobility and awareness through motion.

Posture is dynamic! It needs to be ever-changing to the movements that we are making.

Do you think about your posture when you move? Or just when you're sitting or standing.
It's just as important when moving.

Waking up feeling sluggish is common, but one of the best remedies is physical movement.
Don't discount what 10 minutes can do for you.

Your feet have 33 joints, 26 bones and over 100 muscles. - Why trap them in tight shoes??

Best look for shoes that are wide at the toe base especially, flat and flexible.

Better posture starts from the ground up!!

Never undervalue the importance of play.
It's essentially creative movement.

Walk along a beam on the floor, hang on some rings, try not to stand on the cracks in the pavement, try to only stand on the cracks in the pavement..
Table tennis, handball, juggling, playing catch.

Kids do it all day.

Imagine how your brain lights up when you do it!!

Let's talk about the amazing diaphragm

Did you know the diaphragm is not only a primary muscle of respiration, it is also:

- integral to core stability
- integral to posture

Proper diaphragm function facilitates the intra-abdominal pressure necessary for stabilizing the spine during movement.

Which means efficient breathing patterns that support posture and movement.

Moving well is an art.
For some of us, yes, it comes naturally.
For others, we may have postural habits, injuries etc. But .. all is not lost!
We can regain some motor control, some more stability in our movements and we can see change to those aches and pains.

Shallow or dysfunctional breathing can lead to instability in the lumbar spine and pelvis, impacting overall biomechanical function.
SO ..improper breathing can (sometimes) be the reason for your back pain..!
In reality, there is almost always a breathing/stabilisation issue when we see someone with back pain.

Effective breathing should be seamlessly integrated with functional movement.
If you are holding your breath during exercise or find it hard to breath, it may need more attention.

In a DNS approach, it is the breathing that creates abdominal pressure and core stability aiding all movements like squatting, lifting, or athletic activities.
⚽⚽⚽

Proper breathing not only aids in stability but also enhances performance by optimizing movement patterns, so you can achieve more power/strength, and also can improve oxygenation of the body and its' muscles as a whole.

Would love to introduce the lovely Lou to our clinic, working Wednesdays at our clinic.

"I’m Lou, a holistic therapist who uses person-centred counselling, somatic-experiencing (SE) and mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) alongside more traditional counselling modalities.

I have a special interest in helping people who are
navigating stress, anxiety, depression, burn-out, trauma and PTSD. I think holistically about wellbeing, mental health and trauma.

A typical session will last 75 minutes, and you can expect to find a nurturing safe place where you feel respected and heard. We work together using counselling, mindfulness and somatic techniques tailored to your unique needs.

I have a Bachelor of Science (Honours) majoring in Psychology, a Masters in Counselling (ACA level 2) and extensive training in yoga and meditation techniques for trauma, anxiety, stress, and depression.

I am currently taking new clients and have spots available on some Wednesdays and Thursdays."
