Our team is full of hidden talents! Dr Harbeer Ahedi — known to readers as H.G. Ahedi — had a stand at the Supanova convention over the weekend, showcasing her popular Sci-Fi and Mystery Thriller novels. Several of our team members from the Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute joined in to lend a hand and support her work. Great to see our team backing each other both in and outside the Institute!

Our team of researchers and fellows under the stewardship of Dr. David Parker have had an article published in the May issue of the KSSTA Journal: “Satisfactory 10-year survivorship of medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy for isolated medial compartment osteoarthritis and varus alignment: An analysis from a high-volume institution“. Well done to the dedicated team at SORI.

Age, preoperative stage of OA, cartilage wear and post‐operative alignment are relevant patient‐related risk factors for reduced survivorship after medial opening wedge HTO.

Hurt Your Knee? Here’s What to Do Next 🚨
Whether you twisted it during a workout or took a tumble on the stairs, knee injuries are no fun. But don’t worry—here’s a quick guide to help you take care of it:
✅ Rest: Give your knee a break—avoid putting too much weight on it.
❄️ Ice: Apply ice for 15-20 minutes every 2–3 hours to reduce swelling.
🩹 Compression: Use an elastic bandage or knee sleeve to provide support and limit swelling.
🦵 Elevation: Prop your leg up on pillows to help with circulation and reduce inflammation.
💬 When to see a doctor: If you’re dealing with severe pain, major swelling, or can't put weight on it at all, it's time to check in with a doctor or physical therapist.
Your knees do a lot for you—treat them with care! ❤️

🦵 Tip for Healthy Knees! 🦵

Your knees are key to staying active, so let’s keep them in top shape! A simple yet effective tip: Strengthen your quadriceps! 💪

Strong quads help stabilize the knee joint and reduce strain. Try incorporating exercises like squats, lunges, and leg raises into your routine to build strength and support your knees. 🏋️‍♀️

Remember, it’s also important to warm up before exercising and stretch afterward to keep everything flexible and pain-free!

🦵🔍 Exploring the Meniscus: Key to Knee Function! 🦵🔍

The meniscus is a crucial cartilage structure in the knee, serving as a shock absorber and stabiliser during movement. It’s split into two parts: the medial and lateral meniscus, each playing a role in maintaining the joint’s integrity.

Injuries to the meniscus are common, especially in athletes, and can lead to pain, swelling, and decreased mobility. Understanding its function, as well as the various types of tears and treatment options, is essential for effective recovery.

Last month’s AOA Bone School session at Landmark Orthopaedics explored Knee Osteoarthritis in the Young Patient. With guidance from Dr. Myles Coolican, the session provided practical insights into managing this condition, focusing on approaches that address the unique challenges faced by younger patients.

These sessions offer trainees the opportunity to discuss real-world cases, exchange ideas, and refine their approach to patient care.

We’re proud to announce that our collaborative research on Lateral Extra-Articular Tenodesis (LEAT) in ACL reconstruction has been published in the KSSTA Journal.

The findings demonstrate that while LEAT doesn’t directly enhance graft healing, it significantly reduces graft tunnel widening. This is an important consideration in reducing the risk of re-injury following ACL reconstruction, supporting better patient outcomes.

Research like this helps us refine surgical techniques and improve care for patients worldwide.
