How Common is Lymphoedema After Breast Cancer Treatment?

The chance of developing lymphoedema after breast cancer treatment depends on several factors, including the type of surgery, whether lymph nodes were removed, and whether radiation therapy was used. Here’s a summary based on current clinical data:

After sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) only: Risk is relatively low — around 3–8%.
After axillary lymph node dissection (ALND): Risk increases significantly — around 15–30%, sometimes reported up to 40%.
After breast surgery plus radiation (especially to the axilla): Risk rises further, with estimates around 20–40%.

Other contributing factors include:

Higher body mass index (BMI)
Infections or injuries in the affected arm
Extent of lymph node removal
Chemotherapy (certain agents may slightly increase risk)
Time since surgery (lymphoedema can occur months or even many years later)

This data highlights why ongoing awareness and prevention strategies are so important for anyone who has undergone breast cancer treatment.
