🎶 On the 12th day of Speechiemas, my speechie said to me… two eyes for spying! 👀✨

I-Spy is a fun and powerful way to build language skills. It encourages children to use describing words, grow their vocabulary, listen carefully, and think about clues. It also supports attention and problem-solving, perfect for busy holiday moments!

SLP Tip: 🎄
If clues are tricky, give your child two clue options to choose from. It keeps things fun and confidence-boosting!

🎶 On the 11th day of Speechiemas, my speechie said to me… “Let’s dress up like Santa and his helpers!” 🎁
SLP Hot Tips: Give choices to model new words (e.g., “Do you want the scarf or the antlers?”). Model the answer in sentences to help them learn how they can respond next time, such as “I want the scarf”.

Explain new words by linking them to something familiar. For example, if “antler” is a new word, you can say, “Antlers are big horns on the reindeer’s head” or “Antlers are like sticks that grow on reindeer’s head”.

🎶 On the 9th day of Speechiemas, my speechie said to me…“Let’s talk like we’re at the beach!”

Why this activity helps:
✨ Play at the beach boosts vocabulary (e.g., waves, bucket, sandcastle), expands sentence length, encourages imaginative language, and supports social communication skills like requesting, commenting, and turn-taking. ✨

How to do it:
✅ Gather beach-themed items (real objects or pretend): towel, sunglasses, shovel, bucket, seashells. 🎨
✅ Use “beach language” during play, model words/phrases like splash, dig, scoop, sunny, warm, big waves! 🎅
✅ Optional: Create a “mini beach” for more interactive language practice. 🎁

What skills you’re building:
✔️ Vocabulary expansion 🗣️
✔️ Describing and sentence building 📚
✔️ Social language (requesting, commenting, turn-taking) 🤓

SLP Tip:
🎄 Use repeated models. Say the same target word or phrase several times during play (e.g., “scoop scoop scoop!”). Kids learn best through repetition, especially during fun pretend-play routines.
🎄 Build in opportunities for choice-making. Offer two beach items and ask, “Do you want the shovel or the bucket?” This encourages expressive language, supports requesting, and gives children a structured way to practice vocabulary in a motivating, play-based context.

🎶 On the 7th day of Speechiemas, my speechie said to me, let’s make Christmas Neurodivergent Friendly! 🎁
The holidays can be an overwhelming time for neurodivergent people due to the increase sensory stimulation and big changes to their usual routine. These strategies are helpful to make the holiday season more neurodivergent friendly.

✅ Identify what may be challenging about the holidays and Christmas period
✅ Find strategies and resources that will be helpful to manage change and overwhelm
✅ Trial one strategy at a time and communicate what is working with other people in your child’s life

What skills you’re building:

✔️ Increasing your child’s awareness of beneficial supports for their specific needs 🗣️
✔️ Increasing your child’s ability to advocate for themselves 📚
✔️ Making change to routines easier by having supports in place 🤓

SLP Tip:
🎄 Make it fun and provide choices for your child to choose from so they are more motivated to use the strategies and resources. 🎄
