10 ᴛʜɪɴɢꜱ ɴᴏ-ᴏɴᴇ ᴛᴇʟʟꜱ ʏᴏᴜ ᴀʙᴏᴜᴛ ʟᴀʙᴏᴜʀ
Labour often is not what we see in the movies. It's raw, messy, powerful, emotional, intense and deeply instinctive.
The more you understand about what's normal, the less scary it can all feel.
Here's 10 things no-one tells you about :
1, Labour often starts slowly. Despite what you see on the hollywood screen, the reality is that labour can last hours (often a day or more) and begins with mild, irregular contractions.
2. Contractions have breaks. People often imagine constant pain - I know as a teen, I did! But contractions come in waves with rest periods in between.
3. You might shake or vomit. The hormones released in labour can cause:
-shaking or trembling.
- nausea or vomiting.
4. You may make sounds you didn't expect. Groaning, moaning, humming, low toned primal sounds are really normal and help the body to relax and open up.
5. Labour is often very instinctive. Many women feel a strong urge to move around, rock, sway, lean forward, being guided by their body.
6. You might doubt yourself. Rhea Dempsey talks about these "crisis of confidence" that almost all women experience as some point in time in their labour (often towards the end). They are so normal. This is where your birth team plays a huge role in supporting you through these.
7. Pushing can feel relieving. Women can enjoy that feeling of actively working with their body whilst pushing their baby down. It's productive.
8. Your focus may turn inward. That beautiful cocktail of hormones you release when surrendering to the sensations allows you to tap into your subconscious mind and you go off into "labour land".
9. There are neurological changes occurring in your brain. These start in pregnancy and are enhanced by that beautiful cocktail of hormones - priming the maternal brain to become protective and nurturing over baby once it's born.
10. The moment after birth can feel surreal. Those first moments with baby after birth can feel quiet, emotional and almost dream-like as you get to know one another.
