This study showed that the majority of lumbar disc herniations are attributed to happen spontaneously or with simple movements by patients and only a small percentage are attributed to lifting something heavy.

“These observations may be consistent with either a cumulative injury model or a genetic model of disk degeneration. From the perspective of the cumulative injury model, progressive injury may cause damage of disk structures to such an extent that even a small, transient increase in forces across the spine-insufficient to register as an inciting event by the patient- may lead to the final occurrence of herniation. From the competing perspective of the genetic model, a low frequency of inciting events is expected due to the fact that genetically encoded processes dependent on time and aging are the primary determinants of herniation. However, in the context of the onset of symptoms in acute LDH, neither model of degeneration strongly supports the notion that vigilant avoidance of activity may have staved off the final occurrence of herniation.”

-Post menopause bone mineral density and muscle mass decrease which can lead to vertebral body fracture.

-It's important to check your T and Z scores with a DEXA scan if you are in this population to check your bone density and even more important to see a health care professional for management of any impaired function or pain in your spine.

-We work with women who have a history of vertebral body fracture and are classed as being osteoporotic to not only help with pain but improve their balance, proprioception and strength to hopefully prevent ongoing problems down the track.

-If you are a post-menopausal woman with spinal pain, balance disturbance or movement limitations I'd love to help you. Send us a message or give us a ring on 0422437483.

Disc pain tends to be more central in location, facet joint pain tends to be more lateral or on the side of the spine and sacroiliac joint pain tends to be lower and more in the buttock region. The likelihood of where the pain is coming from before we even do a test is disc 40%, facet 30% and sacroiliac joint 22%. Of course, there can be a combination of these structures adding to the pain picture but our job is to use key tests to help distinguish where the dominant pain is coming from so that treatment can be directed appropriately. If you or a friend has low back or buttock pain we can help. Talk to us today: 0422437483

Our patient Cooky ruptured his ACL graft in August, weeks out from his clubs footy grand final. We found that his knee was testing really well, and had good stability and function once the initial swelling and pain subsided. Through hands on care, management advice and rehab, Cooky was able to continue playing and perform in Cheltenham’s premiership win in September.

Here are some interesting points about posture! The title here should more probably be “Is your posture relaxed?” But what rhymes with relaxed? 😛
Posture is actually subconsciously controlled so adopting and actively controlling a “correct or proper” posture likely leads to impairment of your normal movement patterns and muscular tone leading to tissue aggravation and possible injury. What we want is to feed our vertebral column with novel and varied stimuli to provide a rich understanding of our joint positions, alignment and balance references which our posture will then reflect as being functionally optimal.

The benefits of walking cannot be understated.
People often say they do a lot of walking at work but it is not continuous, at pace (brisk) for at least 20 minutes.
If you can do a 20 min brisk, free flowing walk each day your back will be happy, healthy and less likely to have recurrent or chronic pain episodes.
