๐ฅThere could be many reasons that someone chooses to switch to a plant based milk instead of regular cows milk. โฃ
โฃ
๐ฅIt could be because lactose causes them gastrointestinal discomfort, they donโt enjoy the taste, or potentially because of environmental or ethical reasons. โฃ
โฃ
๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ต ๐ธ๐ฆ ๐ฅ๐ฐ ๐ฌ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ธ, is that cows milk provides us with a stack of nutrients such as ๐ค๐ข๐ญ๐ค๐ช๐ถ๐ฎ, ๐ฑ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฆ๐ช๐ฏ, ๐ณ๐ช๐ฃ๐ฐ๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ท๐ช๐ฏ, ๐ท๐ช๐ต๐ข๐ฎ๐ช๐ฏ ๐, ๐ท๐ช๐ต๐ข๐ฎ๐ช๐ฏ ๐, ๐๐ท๐ธ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ป๐ช๐ฏ๐ค. The other nutrient that cowโs milk and dairy products provide us with is a particular type of fat called ๐ค๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ซ๐ถ๐จ๐ข๐ต๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ญ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ช๐ค ๐ข๐ค๐ช๐ฅ (๐๐๐), which has been shown to offer humans a plethora of benefits including prevention of cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity, and osteoporosis. โฃ
โฃ
โSo how do we go about choosing the best non dairy product?โโฃ
โฃ
๐ฆดIf weโre talking nutritionally (which I naturally do), most milk alternatives are made up with mostly water, with only a small amount of oat, rice or almond (whichever type of milk it is). โฃ
โฃ
๐ฅSoy milk bears the greatest resemblance to cowโs milk from a protein and fat perspective, but all plant based milks contain very little naturally occurring calcium, and have to be fortified instead.โฃ
โฃ
๐ฆดCalcium as we know is the predominant nutrient we derive from dairy products such as milk, cheese or yoghurt, and many Australians are not getting enough calcium in their diets, particularly post-menopausal women, teenagers, and older adults who have a greater necessity for it.โฃ

Aim for at least 100mg/100ml calcium fortification โฃ
โฃ
Ideally, choose a milk that is fortified with B12 (we can only get B12 from animal foods and fortified products)โฃ
โฃ
Happy drinking!โฃ
