Today at BHN, we came together for a special R U OK? Day Lunch & Learn 💛

Hosted by our Alcohol & Other Drugs and Mental Health & Wellbeing Hub teams, the session was a chance for staff to connect, share, and reflect on how we can better support each other.

We learned about the power of checking in, the importance of self-care, and practical ways to respond when someone says, "No, I'm not OK."

Life has its ups and downs every day – that’s why it’s important to make “R U OK?” conversations part of any day, not just today. Starting a conversation could change - or even save - someone’s life.

Last week during Women's Health Week our Community Nursing team had the privilege of visiting a local women’s rooming house, to share a special talk on ‘Mind Health’ - why mental wellbeing matters, how to recognise the signs of mental illness, and protective practices that can help ease anxiety and keep us in the present moment.🌿💚

Together, we explored simple mindfulness activities, reminding ourselves of the power of a pause.🧘‍♀️✨

A big thank you to our wonderful neighbours and for their generous contributions to the goody bags – your support brought plenty of smiles.💜

The Smoking Cessation team here at BHN are pleased to announce that their counselling service has expanded to Bentleigh East!

Due to its success at Parkdale, and with the sessions now a permanent and important fixture, this expansion to another BHN site is much to celebrate.

Commencing at our Bentleigh East site from Thursday, September 25, sessions will alternate between our Parkdale and Bentleigh East sites.

The team look forward to continuing to support the health wellbeing of our clients and welcomes any referrals or re-referrals to the service.

Last week marked Speech Pathology Week 2025, and here at BHN, we celebrated the amazing role that speech pathologists play in helping people connect, communicate, and thrive.
The theme for Speech Pathology Week ‘Impact Through Communication’ reminds us that communication is more than just talking; it’s about confidence, inclusion, and independence. We enjoyed celebrating the incredible role speech pathologists play in helping people thrive at every stage of life.

One big family, driven by hope 💜 This International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember, support, and act.

Overdose continues to affect families and communities everywhere. We honour those lost, stand with loved ones left behind, and help break the stigma that surrounds overdose.

At Better Health Network, we support people through harm reduction, mental health, and community care.

Naloxone is a life-saving medication that reverses opioid overdose - and talking about it saves lives. Naloxone is available at BHN Needle and Syringe Programs at Prahran and South Melbourne.

This year’s theme, "one big family, driven by hope", reminds us that by uniting in compassion and action, we can build a safer future together.

Bold voices, and bright futures 💜
It was an absolute joy for our CEO, Andrea McLeod (she/her), to be part of a panel today, discussing leading out loud, at our Victorian Pride Centre (VPC) site.
In recognition of Wear It Purple Day, a movement that aims to increase visibility, support, and allyship for LGBTQIA+ young people, six organisations, including BHN, came together especially for this event.
With CEO of Minus18, Micah Scott (he/they), CEO of the Victorian Pride Centre, Paul Horwell (he/him), Chair of Switchboard Victoria, Morgan Podesta (she/her), Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities, Joe Ball (he/him), and CEO of JOY 94.9, Paul Scott-Williams (he/they) attending the panel, and hosted by the wonderful Rowena Doo (she/her), this event was a purpled-hued hour of powerful, poignant conversations.
With reflections on how far we’ve come, yet how far there is to go for the safety of rainbow people in schools and workplaces, panel members shared their reflections on inclusive and safe workplace practices, the important use of feedback (negative and positive), the significance of supporting policy changes, and the recognition that there’s still so much to do.
Here at BHN, we recognise and stand in solidarity with the strength of our LGBTQIA+ communities, clients, and staff, and acknowledge that creating safe spaces to belong is an ongoing commitment for us, enabling our people to be bold, proud and authentically who they are.

This ‘Tradie Health Month’ Victoria’s largest gambling support service, Gambler’s Help Southern, wants all tradies to know "we are here for you".

Young men (18-25) are the fastest growing group impacted by gambling harm and tradies often find themselves in the crosshairs of advertising, peer pressure and the gateway from gaming.

This has an insidious impact on our community.

Australians lose more on gambling per person than any other country in the world. At $31 billion a year - that's more than we spend on all other activities that can be addictive and dangerous (including alcohol, to***co and illegal drugs), combined.

Gamblers Help Southern provides free, confidential support to anyone impacted by gambling harm – including family and friends.

BHN was pleased to host the Victorian Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities, Joe Ball , at our Victorian Pride Centre (VPC) site this week, with our CEO, employees, and members of our Rainbow Committee in attendance.

The session was rich with learnings, insights, and reflections from Joe and the team, with topics ranging from safe and inclusive workplace practices and policies, right through to nuanced and personal Lived and Living reflections.

BHN was proud to also take Joe through our recent Rainbow Tick accreditation and receive some thoughtful and considered reflections on how best we can continue to implement culturally safe and relevant practices within both our sites and to our communities and clients, to make the services we offer open to all, but especially those communities under the rainbow 🌈💜

Yesterday, BHN joined other members of the Southern Homelessness Service Network to mark Homelessness Week 4 – 10 August and call for more public and community housing to help end homelessness.

The event, run by Launch Housing and hosted by BHN at the Victorian Pride Centre, was part of the Houses at Parliament Campaign, involving the display of 60,000 origami paper houses in community spaces to raise awareness of the 60,000 people who are homeless in Victoria.

Those in attendance to support this important cause included The Hon Mark Dreyfus KC, MP; Katie Hall MP; Nina Taylor MP; Ruth Gordon from Southern Homelessness Services Network; BHN CEO Andrea McLeod and Port Phillip Councillor Libby Buckingham.

BHN provides compassionate support to those experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness across Port Phillip, Stonnington and Glen Eira communities.

If you or someone you know needs help, call our triage team on 9684 4281 or visit one of our clinics at South Melbourne, Prahran or St Kilda.

Did you know that 30,000 Victorians don’t have a home tonight? That includes 6,800 children.

They’re living in their car, staying on a friend’s couch, in a shelter or refuge, or have nowhere to go at all.

This Homelessness Week, 4 - 10 August 2025, BHN, as part of the Southern Homelessness Service Network, encourages the community to join the call for more public and community housing to help end homelessness. Find out more at https://www.vhn.org.au/housesatparliament

In a country as wealthy as Australia, no-one should be without a home.
