Challenging Negative Thoughts (Reality Testing)

Do you often worry about things that may never happen? This is a common pattern of negative thinking. Reality testing, a CBT technique, can help.

Start by identifying the worrying thought (e.g. “I won’t make it on time, everything will go wrong”).

Ask yourself: What evidence do I have that this will actually happen?

Then try to shift perspective, what would you say to a friend with the same worry?

Reality testing helps you recognise unhelpful thoughts and regain a sense of calm and emotional control.

I am a psychotherapist in training, currently working towards a full professional qualification. As a member of the UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy), I adhere to the ethical and professional standards set by this organisation, which is responsible for maintaining high standards of psychotherapeutic practice in the UK.

Although I am not yet listed on the main UKCP register of fully qualified psychotherapists, I am included in the UKCP trainee member directory:
https://psychotherapy.my.site.com/s/searchdirectory

This means that while I am still completing my training, I work in line with the highest professional and ethical standards.

Why is this important?
UKCP membership ensures that my work is guided by strict ethical principles, regular clinical supervision, and ongoing professional development. This provides assurance that the therapy I offer is safe, professional, and delivered with care and responsibility.

What does the first session look like?

The first session is mainly a time for us to get to know each other. We’ll begin by talking about your expectations and the goals you would like to work towards in therapy. It’s also an opportunity to explain how therapy works, what techniques may be used, and what our work together might look like.

During the session, we will create a safe and supportive space where you can openly share your thoughts and feelings. There is no pressure to say anything “right”, everything takes place in a calm, confidential, and respectful environment.

The first session marks the beginning of our work together on your well-being and personal growth. You are always in control of what you choose to share and explore.
