Volunteers to Assist Children with Disabilities

Volunteers to Assist Children with Disabilities Not for profit Non-Government Organization located in Australia and Sri Lanka.

Volunteers to Assist Children with Disabilities Limited (VACD) is a not for profit, non-government, limited liability charity registered in Australia and Sri Lanka that is administered by a team of dedicated volunteers. What we do:
• Establish VACD centers in key townships across Sri Lanka where children with disabilities will be provided with special education,
life skills, vocational, music and dance training.
• Sponsor and equip clinics at local hospitals to facilitate regular health checkups, medication, therapy, and rehabilitation for children with disabilities.
• Provide children with disabilities with hearing aids, spectacles, walkers, wheel chairs, and subsidize travel and accommodation when special medical attention is needed.
• Provide skills training and micro finance to parents of children with disabilities to supplement their household income.
• Engage with the local community, businesses, government, departments and ministries to eliminate social stigma and isolation and uplift the welfare and rights of children with disabilities and their families.
• Provide monthly allowances for educational purposes for disabled children with academic potential or gifted siblings.

Children from VACD’s Bandarawela Centre enthusiastically made decorations and hung them up to celebrate Children’s Day.

There was an air of fun and excitement as the teachers played music and the children participated in games that helped them socialise, communicate and cooperate with each other in a very welcome break from routine.

The children and their parents from VACD’s Dora Jeanne Centre for Children with Disabilities in Badulla were excited to hold their very first home produce market (called a ‘Pola’ in Sinhala) to sell any extra produce to people in the neighbourhood.

It was an effective way for the children to enhance their numerical and communication skills and learn what it feels like to earn money and perhaps save some for a rainy day.

In another show of community inclusion and support the children from two nurseries in the vicinity of VACD’s Ambagasdowa centre were brought to the centre by their teachers to give all the children an opportunity to socialise on the occasion of World Children’s Day.

The children enjoyed getting to know each other, were well-behaved and were keen to show off their talents.

It was a wonderful way to mark Children’s Day.

The VACD operating model relies in part on support from the government sector, private sector, public associations and members of the community. Recently we have been delighted to notice an increase in community interest from all areas in our mission and instances of support of our children with disabilities, taking various forms.

As proof that the VACD model is a successful one, members of the Young Women’s Muslim Association of Badulla magnanimously visited the Badulla VACD Centre to commemorate World Children’s Day, and put into practice YWMA’s motto of “Faith, Unity, Discipline”. The ladies came bearing edible treats and gifts for the children, bringing them much joy by taking the time to play games and engage with them.

Such events indicate that we are breaking down the barriers of stigma and superstition regarding disabilities, leading to increased social inclusion and acceptance of our children with disabilities into the broader community.

A heartfelt ‘Thank You” to the ladies of Young Women’s Muslim Association of Badulla for their kindness and generosity.

The Uva Navodaya Cultural & Arts Festival, organised jointly by several government institutions was held over a period of several days, and consisted of performances by veteran artists, government staff and school children and together they all presented a wonderful show of Sinhala poetry, songs, dances, street theatre, film screenings etc. There were also poetry and drama competitions.

VACD Bandarawela Centre’s troupe of dancers were excited to be selected to perform at this festival, and they travelled to Badulla accompanied by their special educators Ms. Ramya, Ms. Premali and Ms. Kanishka.

Congratulations to our dancers and especially to Ms. Kanishka who is our dance teacher, on being recognised as a group worthy of participating in this festival!

The third and final day of training of VACD special educators was carried out by Mr Rajkaran and his team from Cerebral Palsy Lanka Foundation, Colombo at VACD’s Ambagasdowa Centre.

With tremendous foresight and dedication Mr Rajkaran had previously made a trip to Bandarawela to assess VACD educators’ skillsets to determine their strengths and weaknesses, in order to tailor his training program accordingly.
As a result, the rehabilitation process that VACD children experience every day will be enhanced much further.

We value and appreciate Mr Rajkaran and his team’s contribution to our mission enormously

Another highly successful and invaluable day of training was conducted by Mr Rajkaran and his team from Cerebral Palsy Lanka Foundation, Colombo at VACD’s Badulla Centre.

This was the second day of a series of three days of training very generously provided by Cerebral Palsy Lanka Foundation, under a collaborative partnership between the two organisations.

Equipping our educators with the critical tools required in rehabilitation of children with disabilities will optimise their quality of life and future independence, which is VACD’s vision and mission.
