Did you know that too much rest can make your lower back pain worse?

Your spine is designed to move and needs movement to stay healthy.

After the first 48 hours post-injury, every day of bed rest results in 2.5 days longer recovery.

Inactivity and especially bed rest can cause substantial weakness and loss of tissue from the musculoskeletal system.

On the other hand, there are many studies demonstrating that controlled exercises can have significant benefits, including reducing your pain quicker.

So instead of rest, focus on rehabilitation.

Pelvic health issues can affect anyone... even professional athletes! 🥇

You've probably heard about people needing to strengthen their pelvic floor muscles, but not all pelvic floor issues are caused by weak muscles.

Sometimes these muscles are holding too tightly and have difficulty relaxing.

This can be the case for elite athletes, particularly those who do a lot of strong core-based exercises.

Keeping these muscles contracted for too long without properly relaxing them can lead to issues like:

• pelvic pain
• difficulties inserting tampons
• pain during s*x
• difficulties with emptying the bladder or bowel

Whether you're a professional athlete or not, it's important to recognise the signs and symptoms of pelvic floor issues.

Bladder leakage isn’t just for the elderly! Our womens and men’s pelvic health physio SHIVANTHY has joined the team this week and is here to help you with these issues and more!

🚻 It's a common misconception that bladder leakage, known as 'urinary incontinence', is just an issue that elderly people face.

The truth is even young, fit individuals, including those who have never given birth, may still experience urinary incontinence, with other associated risks including constipation, chronic coughing and sneezing.

Fortunately, as reported by the Continence Foundation of Australia, the majority of people with incontinence can be better treated, managed or cured! 📈

Physiotherapists can assess and direct management strategies to support conditions of incontinence. At Lifecare we also have teams of continence and pelvic health physiotherapists who have extensive post-graduate training in the field of continence and pelvic health physiotherapy.

Treatment generally involves assessment of the pelvic floor muscles and advice on an individualised exercise program and lifestyle factors including optimal bladder and bowel habits.
