This week, we had the lovely Mary present a workshop to our clinicians on implementing AAC in therapy. What makes a great speechie? One who never stops learning and growing in their practice 📚

Yesterday’s joint session included a play dough activity!
The children identified what was missing from the different sea creatures, and had to use play-dough to create that missing piece! For example, the shark was missing a fin, so they added one with play dough.
Goals targeted:
- Social skills and turn-taking with peers.
- Vocabulary: shapes, colours and prepositions e.g. “the fin is a TRIANGLE shape”, “put the fin ON TOP of the shark”, etc.
- Wh- questions: “where do shark live?”, “why do they need fins?”, “what other animals might you find under water?”, etc.
- Literacy: reading the instructions above the image.
- Fine motor skills: moulding the play dough to the correct shape.

Last week we made banana smoothies for our group therapy session, this week we made strawberries instead. We asked the children what ingredients they remembered from last week’s session, and which ingredient was different. They benefited from many speech therapy and occupational therapy goals! ✨

At OTSP, we always look for functional ways to target goals rather than ordinary table work. Today we combined three different clients together for the last 20 mins of their sessions to make banana splits in the clinic kitchen. Speechies and OTs came together to target a range of goals such as:
- Vocabulary: listing the different ingredients and utensils required.
- Following instructions: reading the steps of the procedure then following it.
- Description: describing the texture of different foods, the taste of the food, colours and sizes of the items, etc.
- Social skills: greeting other children, requesting items from other children, initiating and maintaining conversations, etc.
- Fine motor skills: peeling bananas, squeezing chocolate sauce, breaking biscuits to sprinkle on top, etc.
- Daily living activities: washing hands, preparing foods, eating, cleaning up afterwards, etc.

The children (and their bellies!) enjoyed this delicious activity 😋

Swipe through this video series to watch Amira display some great examples of language stimulation strategies in her therapy session today:
Video 1 - Amira uses open-ended questions, and makes sure to provide pauses after to give the child to time think about the question. There is no pressure on the child to verbalise/answer. Amira also encourages turn-taking skills throughout the activity. A positive learning environment is provided by being calm and providing praises throughout!
Video 2 - Amira is parallel talking, where she verbalises what the child is doing aloud. Notice how Amira uses limited questions, and most of the session is spent providing verbal modelling without pressure on the child to imitate or verbalise himself. This reduces any possibly stress or negativity a child may have about using words.
Video 3 - Amira uses sentence completion, where she starts a song and then pauses to give the child a chance to continue the song with words. You can also use sentence completion with common phrases, such as “ready, set…?”.
Video 4 - Amira encourages problem solving skills. She also provides lots of sound effects as well as more parallel talking and praises.
Video 5 - Amira uses songs to encourage following instructions. This makes language more enjoyable for a child!

What do you think of this session? It is critical to provide a positive, calm and fun environment for a child to increase their success in learning language!
