✨ What are information carrying words (ICWs)? ✨

ICWs are the key words in a sentence that a child needs to understand to follow an instruction. The more ICWs a child can process, the stronger their listening and comprehension skills become! 💬👂

Gradually increase the complexity of instructions and your child’s skills grow. These small changes in how we give instructions can make a BIG different in language development! 📚

We are still buzzing after attending ’s ‘Which Phonological Intervention Should I Choose?’ training last week! 🎉

We explored the clinical decision making process behind selecting the most appropriate phonological intervention - from cycles and minimal pairs to multiple and maximal oppositions. Rebecca shared practical strategies, real life case examples and clear guidance to help us match therapy approaches to the individual needs of the child 🤝🏼

It was an absolute honour to meet the queen of speech sound disorders herself 👑 Her knowledge, passion and generosity in sharing her expertise left us feeling truly inspired ✨

🐾 Meet the adorable, paw-some pals of Tel! 🐾

Just like our furry friends have their favourite toys and games, we can incorporate our kiddos’ favourite things into speech practise too! Practising sounds in a fun and playful way that is motivating for kiddos helps to keep them engaged and purr-fect their speech skills! 🎓

We believe learning is best when it’s full of fun (and a few wagging tails 😉) 🌟🐶🐱🧡

📚 Today is National Similtaneous Storytime! 📚

At 12pm AEST, children across Australia and beyond came together to read The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel and illustrated by Danny Snell. This heartwarming tale follows Tinka the cat and Yacoub, a migrant truck driver, on their journey of separation and reunion, exploring themes of belonging and kindness 🧡

Families can watch the replay of the reading by the National Library of Australia on their YouTube channel 🎥 (youtube.com/)

Happy reading! 📚✨🐱🚛

How do we help kiddos find the right words for their big feelings? 🤔 We’re glad you asked! 😉

Emotions can be big, small and everything in between - but when kids struggle to express them, frustration can take over! 😤 That’s why labelling emotions is so important!
Research shows that when children can name their emotions, it activates the prefrontal cortex - the part of the brain that helps with self regulation 🧘 This means they’re better able to communicate their needs, manage their feelings and build strong social connections. 🤝🏼
Through games, books and real life scenarios, we want to help kids match emotions to expressions, describe their feelings and build emotional vocabulary so they can EXPRESS, not suppress! 🙏🏼

Parents can help to build emotional vocabulary by:

🎭 Acting out emotions during play - when playing with dolls or action figures, model phrases like, “On no, Teddy is sad because he dropped his ice cream! What can we do to help?”

📖 Reading books and pointing out character feelings - pause while reading and ask, “How do you think this character is feeling? How do you know?”

🗣️ Modelling phrases in everyday situations - acknowledge feelings by using phrases such as, “I see you’re frustrated that your tower fell. That can be really upsetting! Let’s take a deep breath together and try again!”

Let’s talk prepositions! 🎯

Prepositions are important little words that help us to understand where things are in space! Words like ‘on’, ‘under’, ‘next to’, ‘in’ and ‘behind’ help us to build strong language skills. The best way to practise? Through play of course! 🦖

🦕 Hide dinosaurs under a box and ask, ‘where is the dinosaur?’
🐒 Hang monkeys on a tree and say, ‘the monkey is on the branch!’
🦴 Line up toys and place one next to another - talk about where each of the toys are!

By naturally using these words in everyday play, you’re helping your child to build esss till language skills. Give it a try and let us know ow your favourite way to practise! 👇🏼
