DriveABLE Australia DriveABLE Australia: Assessing The Medically At- Risk Driver

Providing Evidence Based Decisions About Fitness To Drive

Research shows that it is not so much advancing age that affects whether or not someone remains competent to drive, but instead it is more related to the presence or absence of chronic medical conditions. Many commonly occurring medical conditions are associated with significant increases in accident risk. In particular, conditions which affect mental functions are associated with an unacceptably high risk. For the safety of each individual as well as the safety of other road users, it is crucial that all people who get behind the wheel are fit to drive. Studies demonstrate that medical diagnosis & clinical judgement are poor & unreliable predictors for such an important matter. The most accurate way of determining whether or not someone is still safe to operate a vehicle is to have an objective, evidence based assessment. DriveABLE's evaluations have been developed through award winning research, specifically for experienced drivers whose continued ability to drive safely is in question due to medical impairment. DriveABLE evaluations have been shown to be highly accurate in identifying those drivers who's competence has declined to a point where it is no longer safe for them to continue driving, but also protects those drivers who remain competent from being unfairly penalised.
