About Julia
Julia Frankish is the owner and Director of Evolved Pilates. She opened the studio in 2014 after having taught for a decade in other studios around Melbourne.
Through her experiences with dance training, Julia was introduced to Pilates as a way to strengthen her body, and help hold it together. This ignited a lifelong love of the method and its intelligent movement principles. She attained her Pilates certification in 2005 and has been teaching ever since!
Julia particularly enjoys educating people that are looking to become Pilates teachers, and providing further education for existing teachers. Her philosophy is that Pilates is for everybody – for all ages and body types, and an excellent tool in both acute injury repair and for increasing strength and injury prevention. She is particularly interested in hip and pelvis mechanics, low back pain and dance conditioning. Her approach is personable and educational. Pilates teaches the integration of body and mind, and this, combined with precision and control are consistent themes throughout her classes.
When she is not at the studio either teaching classes or running the business, Julia loves to spend time with her partner Louis and their two children Camille and Emmanuel riding bikes and exploring the Merri Creek. She is also a keen baker and loves cooking and decorating cakes and desserts.

What is a SpringBoard? And what happens during a class?

Looking for a workout that combines strength, flexibility, balance and co-ordination? Interested in a new workout or challenge to add to your Pilates practice?

Look no further – our 5 week Springboard course is due to launch Saturday 20 November!

First things first though, what is a springboard??

The springboard as its name suggests, is a plywood board that is securely attached to the wall, complete with springs; like what you would see on a trapeze table or on a reformer. The springs attach to the board via eyelets, all at different levels to be able to give you differing lengths and tensions together with handles, foot straps and a roll back bar.

The Springboard was designed by Ellie Herman.

The beauty of the springs on Pilates’ equipment, is that they add resistance and allow for movements designed to specifically target muscle groups and joints. The height of attachment and the position you hold the spring in with your arms and legs, allows for an enormous number of exercises to be performed including many you’d be familiar with from other Pilates exercises.

The springboard eyebolts are numbered, and the springs are colored coded, making it very easy for us to give you instructions in a group class of where to put the spring, and which spring to use with which foot loop or handle. A huge advantage in using the springboard, as opposed to other equipment, like the reformer, is that your limbs work independently, due to each limb to having its own spring. This allows us to focus on balancing both sides of the body while challenging symmetry. It also makes it a lot of fun, and the exercise opportunities are limitless!

The other key difference, is that much of the work that we’ll do is in an open chain position, meaning your limbs are working through space, rather than pressing onto a solid surface like the reformer foot bar or carriage. This decrease in stability, makes many familiar exercises far more challenging. The springboard is also a terrific tool for integrating upright movement patterns and challenging your balance!

If you’re interested in coming to try out the springboards, to see how they work and how they feel for your body, register for our short course evolvedpilates.com.au/short-courses
Classes are suitable for all levels, however, are not for you if you’re struggling with a serious injury or are pregnant.

Have a read about our thoughts on why women need to keep lifting weights.

Our bone density starts to decline from the age of 30. As estrogen falls in women during peri and post menopause, this causes a further decrease in bone density. Without adequate load and challenge to our tissues and bones we then put ourselves at serious risk of injury and illness as we age. Research suggests that in Australia, approx 50% of women over 60 years, will have at least one fracture due to low bone density and osteoporosis.

Muscle mass also declines by 1% per year from the age of 30, and this decline accelerates after 40. Without resistance training, our body is likely to suffer from sarcopenia or muscle wasting, a chronic disease of the elderly that causes loss of muscle mobility and function. It is estimated that without any resistance training, by the age of 70, over half of our muscle mass is lost. This loss of strength and mobility increases our risk of falls and injuries and can have a huge impact on our quality of life.

The key to maintaining an independent, healthy active life is resistance training…..this means lifting heavy weights! With more muscle mass, our bones and joints are protected, and our metabolism is more easily maintained.

Attention new mums!
We are running a 5 week mums and bubs class from mid November. Here's something written by Jane, a mum of three kids and the teacher of this class.

The Fourth Trimester

So here you are, home with your beautiful bundle of joy, exhausted but living on cloud nine. You have made it through the pregnancy, the birth, the first feed, the first nappy change and everything else in between! You’ve been to see you doctor, who has given the all clear for getting back into exercise… great, but what does that even look like in this postnatal body? You feel like you have lost every gain you made before pregnancy and even while doing your pre-natal classes. You feel weak and frankly a little torn apart – so what to do now? Yep, you guessed it – Pilates! ☺

But before you jump onto the reformer, there are a few things to remember… You have pretty much just had major surgery (whether it was a vaginal birth or c-section), and your body has gone through so much to bring this beautiful little person into the world. It is not a time to be putting pressure on yourself to ‘bounce back’. Be gentle, be kind and go slow. Come in for your first session ready to move again, ready to focus on yourself again (even if just for an hour) and understanding that it may take time, but we will get you there (wherever ‘there’ is for you).

Treat your 4th trimester as a time for your body to recover, rest and reset. Some mums will return to their pre pregnancy exercise routine sooner than others, some may feel their body wants to move differently to before, some may be happy to just have a quiet hour to themselves to reset – there is no right or wrong, everything is normal and welcome here.

Beginners Strength - 5 week course Friday 11am starting 19th November

To maintain an active healthy life, we need to regularly load our muscles, bones and tissues. This is particularly important as we age, to counteract declining muscle mass and bone density.

Our strength classes are for beginners who appreciate individual attention and for those who prefer to not train in a large gym.

We focus on your overall global muscle strength, balance and mobility and will adjust movements according to your fitness level and ability.

These classes are well suited to beginner level clients, pre/post natal and seniors and are limited to 6 clients per session.

Price: $125 (save $50). Book a second course and only pay $100 (save $75)

Mums and Bubs Wednesday 11am starting 17th November
During the pre & post natal period, there are many musculoskeletal issues that can arise. Pilates is a great way to help prevent, or at least lessen the effects of these on a woman’s body. Pilates is a fabulous blend of strength, balance, flexibility and general fitness. With the available research emphasising the benefits of exercise throughout your postpartum journey, Pilates has you covered.

Classes are progressive throughout the 5 weeks and are limited to 8 people.

Evolved Pilates is seeking a Remedial Massage Therapist or Myotherapist to join our team. An existing qualification as a Pilates Practitioner or a desire to train in-house to become a qualified practitioner would be ideal.

Evolved Pilates is an established and innovative studio in Fairfield. You will be joining a team of Pilates Instructors with years of experience. Our approach to client care is driven by education, retraining and functional rehabilitation. You’ll need to be driven, motivated and enjoy working as part of an equally motivated team

The treatment room was purpose-built for massage; it’s 4x4m with natural light, floorboards, good shelving and a basin with sensor tap.

We would love to have you join our team, but you might prefer to simply lease the room and share our great location and clientele. This option would suit a practitioner with an existing client base looking to move to a bigger location with the support of an existing practice and a desire to integrate into our Pilates programs.

Either way, If you’re ‘hungry’ for knowledge, have a passion for movement and enjoy being part of a like-minded team, this is an exceptional professional opportunity.

We’d love to hear from you. Please send your resume and cover letter to Julia@evolvedpilates.com.au.

Or if you’d prefer, give me a call and we can discuss the role and the potential.
