30 years ago I began my journey into the Chiropractic Profession.
It was and is still one of most exciting times of my life a dream come true to be studying at RMIT University from when I was interviewed to graduating and exploring the world of health of which I've never spoken about. I was 21.
One of the concepts that inspired me to be a chiropractor, was the role Subluxation had and has to human health. I remember representing RMIT University twice at the WCCS (World Congress in the USA - South Carolina and San Francisco) as a student and meeting the founder of the Hellenic Chiropractic Association in Greece in 1998. This is where I better understood the Greek Heritage of Chiropractic Ideas as per DD Palmer, "In honor and remembrance of the fact that the principles... were direct from the Greeks" of which he asked Reverend Samuel W**d to name our profession from Greek words (of which there were several suggested).
Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine wrote extensively about the spine and subluxation around 400BC, a long time ago (mind you in greek) and it wasn't about 'joints out of place' thinking only. Several medical professionals explored subluxation to health and the nervous system way before DD Palmer (especially between 1543 - 1861).
A key concept to consider is the LUX part of SubLUXation which appears to come from the greek term 'λοξός' (loxos - not just latin luxare). which I'm not sure has ever been looked at from this etymological perspective. This word can mean slant, oblique and is so relevant to ideas of body mechanics and posture, which again both Hippocrates and DD Palmer wrote about. The 'λοξός'/LUX part appears in our practices, as the holistic postural neuro-musculo-skele-tendo-ligamentous effect in relation to Subluxation - not just a joint out of place!
