Do you suffer from the Winter Blues? Here are a few things you can do to help ease those feelings through the cold winter months.
🕺🏽Keep your body active! Try a new workout routine or take a yoga class. If you want to stay home, there are endless fitness resources available online.
🪴Bring nature indoors. If it's too cold to go outside, bring nature into your home. Embrace your home space, make it cozy and colourful.
🌞 Soak up that sun. Make the most of those little pockets of sunshine, even if you're sitting by a window. Your body needs Vitamin D!
🧠 Keep your mind occupied. Plan for spring. Renovate. Redecorate. Start a new hobby.
🧘🏼‍♀️ If you simply feel unmotivated in your spare time, and that is getting you down: Don't forget that winter is a time of hibernation in the natural world; a world that we are part of. Take this time to reconnect with yourself. Give yourself permission to stay at home, keep cozy, drink delicious hot drinks, watch movies, read books and connect with friends and family.

If you are somebody who struggles with self care, engaging with a therapist can help to identify the root reasons why and the steps you can take to make changes for a healthier you. 🎨

Arts Therapy as a mental health profession can be little understood for its true qualities.

Myth #4: Arts Therapy is for kids and people who are unable to participate in talk therapy.

Truth: Although kids can be especially receptive to arts therapy, it can be transformational to people of all ages and abilities. The beauty of arts therapy is its inclusivity and arts therapists are trained in adapting their therapeutic process to suit each client's age and individual needs. In arts therapy a client will use art processes to go beyond their words, unlocking and working through issues with the support of their skilled therapist.

Arts Therapy as a mental health profession can be little understood for its true qualities.

Myth #3: Anyone who holds therapeutic art sessions is an Arts Therapist.

Truth: A qualified Arts Therapist has undergone nationally accredited training in psychotherapy and the specialised use of art medium and process in therapeutic practice. Arts Therapy has been an established mental health profession for over 50 years and therapists adhere to professional standards. Simply engaging in creative art can be powerfully therapeutic, however arts psychotherapy conducted under the care of a skilled therapist works at a deeper level, while addressing the client's specific goals.

Arts Therapy as a mental health profession can be little understood for its true qualities.

Myth #2: An Arts Therapist will analyse my art and know what I'm thinking.

Truth: There are many different ways to interpret any artwork and the client's own interpretation is paramount. It is the role of the Arts Therapist to facilitate and support the client to gain insight and understanding from their own symbolism, which will have unique meaning for them. An Arts Therapist does not psychoanalyse their client's artwork.

Arts therapy as a mental health profession can be little understood for its true qualities.

Myth #1: Arts therapy is like an art class, or activity to help people relax or express emotions.

Truth: Arts Therapy does often result in the creation of art, however it differs greatly from what would be referred to as an art class, or therapeutic art making. Arts Therapy uses the art medium as a tool to facilitate healing and reach a therapeutic goal.

🎨🌱There is a significant difference between Art therapy and engaging in therapeutic art making, in that Art therapy has its roots in psychoanalysis. First and foremost, the role of an Arts therapist is to build a therapeutic relationship with the client, with the goal to engage at a deep emotional level. An Arts therapist can help a client to identify, express and process emotions that may be suppressed or stuck.
