***Pregnancy Physio Assessment ***
Hi Bumpity Bumpers, we hope your week is going well and you have been able to stay dry 🙌

Today we wanted to go through what we do in a physio assessment in pregnancy 💚

So what are the things we cover?
💚 Bladder and bowel habits
💚Exercise history and goals for pregnancy
💚General Health questions
💚Sexual function
💚Musculoskeletal concerns
💚Pelvic floor assessment

We then use our assessments to help make a treatment/management plan specific to you in your pregnancy 🙌

We recommend your first appointment to be in the 2nd trimester then another in 3rd trimester. We can then focus on making adjustments as things go on and help with birth preparation 😍

We know that women get the best results when they are proactive in pregnancy and help future proof their pelvic floor 🙌😍

We hope to see you in clinic soon 💚

***Physio Edition- Birth Prep***
Hi Bumpity Bumpers, we hope your week has been a good one 😃 We wanted to go through what we consider good preparation for birth from a physiotherapist perspective 💚

So what do we recommend as Pelvic Health Physio's?
💚Pelvic floor assessment- we advise our ladies to get an initial assessment in the 2nd trimester then a follow up in the 3rd trimester. We get a baseline of your pelvic floor muscle function, advise re:push prep, things to focus on during pregnancy pelvic floor wise
💚Exercise recommendations- go through your current exercise, guideline recommendations and then make a plan of action individual to you
💚Vaginal Birth Prep- cover all things va**nal birth related- stage 1 and 2, positions for labour, how your support person can help, initial 6 weeks PN top tips
💚Pain management options- non medication pain management options, medication options, things to discuss with your birth provider
💚Caesarean section Prep- no matter which way you birth, we always go through c-sections to ensure our mums to be feel in control and have the knowledge to make informed decisions. We go through pre op, during the op and what to expect in the first 6 weeks PN
💚 First 6 weeks postnatal- we like to go through rocovery expectations and how we can support you, what to focus on in the first 6 weeks postnatal and when you would seek extra support

We think being proactive is YOUR best tool in birth prep 🙌 We get great results for our mums when they do these things and feel empowered going into birth! So if you haven't booked your appointment yet...please use this as you reminder 😍

***Birth Trauma Awareness Week***
Hi Bumpity Bumpers, we hope your week is going well 🙌 We just wanted to raise some awareness today around Birth Trauma Awareness week 💚

Birth trauma is a woman's experience of interactions and/or events related to childbirth that cause overwhelming distressing emotions and reactions, leading to short and/or long-term negative impacts on a woman's health and well-being.
(Leinweiber et al., 2022)

This can be physical, psychological or both. It can occur for both parents or just one. It has a significant impact on mental health and life in general.

There is a big push for more action to be taken to reduce if not eliminate this for birthing parents 🙌

We know 1 in 3 will report birth related trauma in Australia 🤯
1 in 10 women report being victims of obstetric abuse
1 in 25 develop PTSD following a traumatic birth
1 in 10 support birth partners get postnatal depression

The stats are significant and should be better, so let's change the story💚 Let's empower the parents going into a birth and change the birthing story 🙌

***So I have a prolapse, what now?***
Hi Bumpity Bumpers, I hope you are well 🙌 Continuing on with our POP series we wanted to speak about some facts and treatment options 💚

So what do we know about POP?
💚Up to 40% of women are affected by POP (Wang et al 2022)
💚6-20% undergo surgery by the age of 80 (Maher et al 2017)
💚1 in 10 women will therefore experience POP symptoms of the age of 50

So how do we treat POP?
Conservative treatment is the first line of treatment recommended in the management of POP. It requires a multimodal and team approach and focuses on skin quality, bladder/bowel habits, pelvic floor function and modifying load.

Ensuring skin quality and hormones are good, plays a big role in POP management. Pelvic floor rehabilitation is another important factor, whether someone has more invasive treatment, the baseline function of the pelvic floor is important!

Other less invasive treatment for POP is pessary management- a medical silicone device that helps support the pelvic organs. If a POP is quite significant, baseline factors will be addressed but surgery may then be required.

What we know about surgery is that failure rates of up to 50% occur and 30% re-operation rates (Reid et al 2023) 🤯

Considering these factors is important for treatment/management decisions 😉

We are here to help YOU, if you have been putting off treatment, please know we are here to help 🙌

***Risk factors for Pelvic Organ Prolapse***
Hi Bumpity Bumpers, we hope you all had a great weekend 🙌 Today we wanted to go over some risk factors that can contribute to Pelvic organ prolapse (POP).

So what are some of these risk factors?
💚Increased weight
💚Chronic cough
💚Increased intrabdominal pressure (breath holding)
💚Heavy liftingg
💚Vaginal childbirth +interventions
💚Chronic constipation
💚Genetics

The good news is that some of these factors are modifiable, unfortunately some are not! But that doesn't mean we can't do things to reduce the risk and optimise YOUR pelvic floor 😍

So as Pelvic Health Physiotherapists our role is to educate, assess and help you make those modifiable changes to help reduce your risk 🙌

So if you are keen to prevent a POP, please come in and see one of our friendly physio's 🥰

*** Pelvic Organ Prolapse Awareness Month ***
Hi Bumpity Bumpers, we hope you all had a lovely weekend 😍 We wanted to share today about Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) Awareness Month 💚

A POP is a decent of one or more pelvic organs into the va**na. It is described as a heaviness, dragging, a lump or bulge you can see/feel, difficulty emptying bladder or bowels and risk of recurrent UTI's.

A POP is often seen as taboo but is extremely common with about 50% of women who have had a child experiencing a POP 🤯 Although you can get a POP without having a child....

There are common causes/risk factors such as:
💚Instumental birth delivery (forceps/vaccum)
💚Large perineal tears
💚Genetics
💚Chronic cough
💚Heavy lifting
💚Chronic constipation
💚Connective tissue conditions

Surpisingly only 1 in 5 will seek help 🤯

The first line treatment for POP is pelvic floor rehabilitation. The aim is to improve pelvic floor function, strength, coordination and muscle tone 🙌

So if you have POP symptoms, please know it is more common than you think and we are here to help YOU 😍🙌
